5 out of 5 stars What Bugs? This is the best version of all 3 games!   October 1, 2008
I read the low stars for this as saying MYST and Riven have errors, and won't run well on XP. I bought this, played them, and had 0 problems. Everything was beautiful, and the stress of popping in and out multiple CDs was a blessing.

This never gave my DVD-Rom problems at now, no problems from XP, no problems from Quick Time, nothing!

Then I have to say they are packaged nicely, and the making of videos are very nice. I just wish they could have included a poster or something to honor it, but you know what I love it.

I don't know about all of you who got errors on XP, but I give this 5 stars, no questions asked.

Myst is a great classic. With Vista, you might need to run it in some kind of Windows XP shell.

5 out of 5 stars Final Word on Mac Compatibility   September 25, 2008

I played this entire collection on a vintage iBook with a 12-inch screen. All three games are compatible with Mac OS Classic (I was running OS 9.2.) An OS X version is also included in the set. You have a choice whether to play the Classic version or the OS X version. You do NOT have to have both on your computer.

I played this set consecutively over the course of a couple of months this summer -- long after the Myst popularity faded. The Myst version in the set holds up really well, compared to other games from that period. The art is still stunning and the game remains intriguing despite the relative simplicity of program.

Of course, Riven cranks the gameplay up a couple of notches with more video elements and some of the puzzles seem nearly impossible at times. Don't give up. The solutions are really rewarding. Finally, Exile is the most sophisticated and offers great surprises.

2 out of 5 stars Quicktime issues   September 12, 2008

As much as I liked Myst from back in the day, this newer version has compatibility issues with Quicktime 7 and Win XP. In short, if you are running iTunes 8 and with QT 7+ (you must to have iTunes 8). It is unlikely that this DVD will work for you... Unless you downgrade QT 7 to QT 6. then the game works. BUT iTunes 8 will fail to open (errors on launch). So it boils down to what is more important iTunes or Myst. I could not any patches on the publisher's websites as of this writing, furthermore this is a known bug. :(
FYI:
dual core intel chip
2 gigs of ram
win xp sp3
iTunes 8 w/ QT 7

4 out of 5 stars First two are great   August 19, 2008
I've been a fan of the original Myst game since I was ten years old or so, and my family played it together then. It took us, I don't know, a few months.

Then, awhile later, I played Riven with my younger brothers. We spent a couple of years puzzling it out, but finally, we got to the end with a little tiny help from a hint guide online (a choice I regret, and if I play Myst 4, it will be without hints).

Which brings us to the point when we bought all three together. Riven is just so much better on DVD, Myst Masterpiece is lovely (if you've finished it, read the hints, they're hilarious!), but Exile was somewhat lacking. It just didn't have the same feel as the original two. But it was satisfying in the end, just way too easy. We finished it in a week of concentrated effort.

I would have liked the game makers to package the discs in jewel cases, since DVDs can get scratched when they are left in envelopes. Also, there was no included installer for Macintosh anywhere, just a little read me with instructions for installing by hand. I had no problem doing it, but they really could have shown more respect for the platform that Myst originated on.

A plus side of the anniversary edition is the making of videos included with Riven and Exile. Myst comes with an interview with Rand Miller, detailing Uru, and it ends up being a commercial. Oh well. The other movies are great.

All together, this is a satisfying package of nostalgia, even for somebody in their teens who remembers growing up with Myst and Riven.
