4 out of 5 stars Pretty entertaining   July 10, 2008
Very fun game for AI enthusiasts, fairly diverse song list included and plenty for download. My only qualm is that they do not follow the actual contest format of having you choose a song from a specific genre or pick them for you like in the later rounds or have you do two songs when the number of contestants is down to the final five or so. Also would like a more competitive mode so not everyone goes on to win finals in single player mode.

3 out of 5 stars Okay singing game, terrible dancing characters! Yikes!   June 24, 2008
The actual singing part of the game is okay - nothing special - only buy this if you like the songs that are included.

(Side note: If you like heavier music you should just buy the stand alone Rock Band game and a USB microphone.)

The major setback for this game is the horrible character dancing during songs. You could have a character singing a rock song but they will dance like they are singing Britney Spears...really distracting. The AI judges in this game are very, very creepy - even more than in real life!

3 out of 5 stars Satisfactory, but backgrounds are boring and lacks tracks from original artists   April 15, 2008

During the past few months, my friends and I have been very interested in music video games and have spent many Friday afternoons and evenings playing them. This one has not been one of our favorites.

First of all, there is no option to buy this game without the bundled USB microphone which adds to the cost. I already own multiple microphones from other singing games I have purchased and really didn't want any more. This one also felt cheaper and lighter compared to some other ones, such as the Rock Band microphone.

I was also disappointed, because the tracks are not sung by the original artists but rather third parties. If I am going to spend $70 on a game, I would prefer to at least have the original tracks to listen to instead of some other unknown singers, especially for songs I don't know and am being introduced to by the game.

The characters, which are not a huge part of the game, nevertheless are all kind of ugly. This makes it more difficult for my me and my friends to choose characters that will be like us on the screen, because we don't like looking the way most of the characters look. This isn't too big of a deal, but it's slightly annoying, so I figured I would throw the idea out there.

The backgrounds are rather boring compared to some other singing games, such as Singstar, which includes the original music videos in the backgrounds. All the background shows while you're singing is the ugly character you are forced to choose (because there are no pretty ones) possibly dancing badly.

Conclusively, if you just want to sing with words and pitch bars and do not care about any of the other features of the game, then this game should be fine. However, I feel like the overall value is less than the cost due to several flaws.

4 out of 5 stars Family Fun!   March 28, 2008

My 7 year old daughter, husband, and I are really enjoying this game!

Initially, I wanted to get the unbundled version of this game since we already had a microphone from Rockband. But, I couldn't find one for Xbox 360, so I bought the bundled version, and I'm really glad I did! The game is a blast! We especially love singing together in a duet or battle format.

Even if you don't sing well, you can be successful on the easy skill setting. The judging mode of the game is not as fun as the head-to-head mode, in my opinion. The judges are as annoying as they are on the show. Singing on easy, you always win and become an American Idol, so it's pretty predictable.

Some improvements I would suggest would be more songs to unlock and a tour mode. It appears that there are only three songs to unlock and they aren't even very good songs. The rest are characters and videos, which I couldn't care less about unlocking. A tour mode (that you get to after you become an American Idol), would be fun, especially if it meant unlocking more songs and venues.

2 out of 5 stars Fairly disappointing.   March 12, 2008
This game feels rushed and unpolished. There are occasional glitches (graphic freezes and graphical anomalies such as your character singing into an invisible microphone) and it just feels like not much work was put into it. It just isn't nearly as much fun as Rock Band, and the pitch recognition in Rock Band is a lot more accurate. The biggest problem with this game is pitch recognition - at the low end of my voice the game just doesn't respond accurately, no matter how I adjust the mic settings. There's also quite a noticeable delay between singing and hearing your voice through the TV speakers, something that is inexcusable for a karaoke game. These are all thing Rock Band got just right, so why is this game so buggy?

The real American Idol judges all provide their voices to this game but the character models look eerily lifeless. You'll quickly start getting repeated comments. While fun at first, the American Idol schtick does start to get a bit tiresome, although thankfully there is an option to just sing without hearing the judges at the end.

On the plus side, there is a good selection of songs (mostly pop/rock) and plenty more to come via downloadable content (42 available as of March 12th 2008). You can customise your characters' costume with loads of outfits and there are quite a few "venues" where you can sing. There are a few unlockable videos of actual American Idol song clips and interviews with the judges about the game.

Overall, a bit of a frustrating experience and it is well worth the extra money to buy Rock Band instead (where you get to sing, play guitar and play drums).
