5 out of 5 stars Don't call me Shirley.   August 20, 2008
Wow, I just finished beating the single player campaign on this game , and what a thrill ride. This game definitely deserves all the praise it has received by both critics and gamers alike.

The graphics are outstanding. On max settings this game is one of the best looking out there right now. Lots of awesome lighting, shadow, and particle effects as well as some pretty good textures. The game also has a pretty fluid frame-rate and only a little bit of pop-in but that trelies more on your computer than the game itself. This game may not be quite as forgiving as Steam powered games but it still will run smoothly on at least low settings on most newer computers, and it doesn't take all that much to max it out either. I'm running a 2.4 ghz Core 2 Duo Processor With 3 GB of RAM and a 8600M GT with max settings. Yep, and if you didn't recognize what that M meant, it stands for mobile. That's right folks the game is running max on my laptop and smoothly at that.

The soundwork is astounding. All of the gun and explosion sound effects are awesome, and the guns really sound unique. The soundtrack itself is simply epic, it's what you would expect in an oscar nominated war film. The voicework is espeecially good and you really get into the characters.

This game features the classic Call of Duty game-play that we know and love, but a little more fine tuned and in a modern setting. The modern setting is a nice change, I was getting kind of tired of World War II, plus I think I can relate more to this story thanks to the state of the world we live in today, and got a little more emotionally involved. While the campaign is short, it has a ton of action and is litered with interactive cinematic sequences that are just plain awesome and make the whole thing feel truly epic. Some of the missions are amazing, my favorite is the sniper mission flashback in Chernobyl. The storyline in this game rivals Metal Gear Solid in terms of being an interactive experience rather than just a game. When you're all finished up with the single player, there's the multi player. Now, Call of Duty multi-player has always been good, but they completely revolutionized it here. It is much more deep, and much more competitive. Being able to create your own classes and choosing your advantages and disadvantages wisely is pretty darn cool. Plus now there's players ranks and little unlockables to show that you're just that much better than that other guy. You'll get your money's worth with this loaded multi-player.

This game features a stellar, cinematic single player experience and an awesome, addicting multi-player game as well. People are sure to be playing the multi-player for years. If you've been waiting for a price drop to buy this game, then yo better start asking Activision to hurry the heck up.

This is one of the best military games I have ever purchased. I take my hat off to the makers of this game.

3 out of 5 stars Excellent graphics, good replay value, too linear   July 27, 2008

I enjoyed COD4 but found it to be too linear in gameplay, and the weapons weren't customizable like those in Rainbow Six Vegas or Vegas 2. In fact, the thing that irked me the most was the lack of single fire modes for the COD4 weapons. It was always spray and pray, or aimed spray and pray. In R6 Vegas, you can at least select between single, burst, or full-auto and have the ability to suppress most of the weapons.

Regarding the plot, it is standard "bad guys get nukes, try to destroy the world" fanfare with your character saving the day. They did not disclose the exact date when Lt Price went to Russia to assassinate the arms dealer, but the fact that the enemies had suppressed FN P90's suggests it took place in 1994 at the earliest, when the weapon was first released. However, I am not sure when/if the FN P90 was available to Russian military forces at that time so I would have to assume that COD4 takes place around 5-15 years from now.

The character had limited access to vehicles, so this is definitely not the same as Battlefield 2 or Halo.

Pros: Great graphics, fun game play, lots of weapons to choose from, cool M203 / explosion effects, plenty of bad guys to take out.

Cons: Very linear/limited game play, stupid dogs can take out SAS or USMC if you don't press the MELEE attack button at the right time.

Overall: 3/5 stars, it could be better with less linear gameplay and more customizations for weapons.

5 out of 5 stars Very entertaining in both single and multiplayer modes   July 21, 2008
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
In video games, I especially like First Person Shooters, and COD4 has to be considered one of the best available right now. It's graphices, sound, story and voice acting are all very, very good. It falls down in the single player game in being too short, and too scripted and linear compared to Crysis, for example, but is still challenging, varied and enjoyable. One of the features that bothers me is that if you don't advance during the course of a battle to where the designers think you ought to be, you can plan on the enemy spawning endlessly. I'd really like to see that changed in future iterationsto allow a different approach to a battle.
The multiplayer game, although it borrows the maps from the single player games, is another experience altogether. Be prepared for hundreds of servers with varied setups and maps, featuring A LOT of players, many of whom are VERY good at what they do (including my son). As a 65 year old, I can tell you that old age reaction times can be a challenge! I highly recommend this game.
