It's definitely fun, but it could be better. August 15, 2008
I've been a fan of the Madden football games for just about all 20 years they've been around. Madden 09 is about what I expected. The latest Rosters with all the newest features. I haven't had a chance to dive into the 5 on 5 feature before this review.
The gameplay on the Wii is a little different than on other systems. You have to thrust the remote forward for a truck move or big hit, swing it to the right or left for a stiff arm, and do a throwing motion to pass the ball. If you like, you can re-draw receiver routes before the play begins with the Wii mote. Also, after a TD, interception, or other big play you have to shake the Wii mote and nunchuk to get a boost for your players.
The graphics really aren't that great even compared to Madden 04/05 on PS2. The crowd is a paper joke and dissapointing. I wasn't expecting PS3 graphics, but I believe EA could have done more in this aspect of the game.
All in all, I'm happy to have this game and look forward to bringing my team to the top. The best part about the game is that my family and friends can play even though they aren't used to Madden and we can have an "even" game.
The best Madden for Wii yet! August 13, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is the ultimate football game for the Wii, hands down. EA got this one right. If you've played 07 and 08, then it's basically the same game control-wise, but don't let that fool you. On the surface, it may seem to be the same, but when you launch the game, there is so much more there.
First off, All-Play. What is it? It allows the novice to get into the game and start playing without having to worry about learning all the different control moves to play the game. You can have Madden suggest all the plays for you, you can use a simplified playbook with common plays or else, you can use the team's playbook and have at your disposal an arsenal of plays to beat down your opponent with. You can switch between the different playbook options easily while in the game.
Whether you are a rookie or an All-Pro player, everyone can compete against each other with their own style, at home and online! Oh, and no Friend codes are necessary to play online! Great move, EA!
Control-wise, you can just hike the ball, run it with a few moves (jukes, spins, etc) and pass it to the open receiver all with minimal controller moves and/or button presses. When passing, look for the receiver whose icon turns green and swing the Wiimote forward to pass it to that receiver. You don't have to select him to do it. As you get better at the game, you can then move up to the more complex controls from last year's game.
The all-new Call Your Shots is the hot route option on steroids! In this case, you select your receiver whose route you wish to modify and then using the Wiimote, you draw your own route for him to run! This option is NOT available on any other console. It is specific to the Wii and it's easy and it works great. You can still use the old hot-route option if you want to, but why would you?
When you score a TD or a big hit, jump up and start dancing as hard as you can, waving your nunchuck and Wiimote around using different gestures. The more you do it, the more you boost that player's gameplay rating and it gets the crowd into the game.
5 on 5 mode is akin to playing backyard football. You start at midfield and have 4 plays to score a TD. It's over the top and fun. Unfortunately, it can't be played online.
The graphics, while still PS2-ish, have been upgraded on the Wii and look better than previous versions on the Wii. Heck, it definitely looks better than the 2008 PC version. It's not next-gen but what really makes this game shine is the ability for novices, intermediate and hard-core Madden-ites to be able to play this game. I've never had more fun with Madden than I have had with this version and I'm in no way an expert on this game. I can barely play on All-Pro and All-Madden is just nuts for me, so now I can hang pretty tough and learn what to look for as Madden gives me tips.
And finally, the passing bug of years past is gone! They fixed this and refined the way it registers your movements so that it seems much more natural. Also, players getting stuck seems to have been removed as well. I haven't experienced it yet, though, but I've read accounts of others seeing it once in a great while, but nothing like in the previous versions.
No, why 4 out of 5 for the game overall? First off, the Miis. The refs are Miis. Madden is a Mii (that is scary!) and you cannot turn this option off. I believe it's Nintendo's way of trying to make the game appeal to the family crowd and it probably works. I didn't find it too bad, but I wish it could have been an option to turn on or off. But, it definitely plays into the way Nintendo wants to market the Wii which is it's a family/group system that encourages people to play together, so it's not all bad.
I'm having problems when receiving a pass manually. You must raise both the nunchuck and the Wiimote up at the same time to make your player reach/jump for a pass. I've practiced this as much as I can and I just can't seem to get it to work consistently. In fact, one time I swung both controls up so fast that the cord from the nunchuck to the Wiimote came up and smacked me in the face. OUCH! I guess I just need to keep practicing this one, but all the other motion controls work great.
Finally, 5 on 5 not being online brings the score down a bit as well.
Overall, this game is worth it and is deserving of the 5-star fun factor rating. It's the best Madden yet for Wii and it shows EA listened to the gripes from people about last year's version.
The Effort the Wii Needed from EA Sports. August 13, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I just received my "release date delivery" of this game from amazon.com, right on time -- so thanks amazon!
From the moment I put this game in the Wii, it has been fun. The menu is sharp, the load times are great, and it is packed full of features.
Immediately you can tell that there is a graphical bump from last years Wii outing - which is nice.
The controls are a lot more responsive then last years as well -- so the things that were most challenging (catching, swating passes, etc) are way more responsive and on the mark. I have not even tried All-Play controls - I play with advanced. It is fun - and just like playing on any other system as far as challenge goes. All of the All-Play stuff is optional - so don't let that sway you away from getting this great game.
The online has also improved 100%. The interface is easy to set up a new EA account, or transfer an older one. The friends list feature is great - no friend codes needed - just add the ea username, and wait for your friends to approve you. Great online feature this year.
The mini game tournament, and 5 vs 5 mode adds more features to the game - and more fun. My friend and I just did a mini game tournament in party mode and it was a blast.
Overall - 4 stars - can always be better - but this is a great football game. It makes me wish EA would put this effort into every game - and not just on "anniversary" years.
If you like NFL, competition, fun, and a great football game - pick this one up asap.
DON'T BUY THIS GAME August 13, 2008 7 out of 10 found this review helpful
I am a big fan of the Madden franchise, and i own a Wii but not an xbox or ps3, so my main option was to buy this. I have Madden 08 on the wii, and that game is mediocre in my opinion. Many reviews for it will say so.
But wait, this is an 09 review? Well what's the difference? Basically, madden 09 all play is just like 08 on wii. Messy controls, glitches, bad graphics (even for wii games), lack of many other modes and watered down gameplay. I love the superstar mode, i have since it came out in the 07 edition. In 08 and 09, you can't even edit your superstar's appearance. You can't change hair color and style, add apparel, tattoos, different helmets, and even your OWN NUMBER. What's the point of superstar mode if you can't make your player your own?? Oh, and you once again don't have access to create-a-player mode.
Franchise mode? It's the same as 08, you can't move your team, edit the stadium, create your own stadium, create your own team or do anything interesting until the offseason mode. Sounds like fun, right??
I give credit to EA for the "Call Your Shots" feature. It lets you create your own route for a reciever. It's not perfect, or anywhere near. The gameplay is terrible. Let's say you score a touchdown. All the sudden there are flashing lights and a goofy player telling you to "dance". Why would anyone want to dance? It's a football game, not DDR. It's cool to see players dance but not make it look like a 5 year old game. This applies to sacks and interceptions as well. I say no thanks. After each play you see gaudy letters telling you how many yards to go and what down. I'd prefer just a nice, simple version on the scoreboard. Even 08 had one. The referees are your miis. Wow, that's silly and unrealistic.
EA tried to make this game simple for younger audiences and families. Here's the problem: It's football. It's a complicated sport. You can't simplify football, there are too many rules for that. Not too many kids like watching football for more than 15 minutes. In general, EA changed up the gameplay by making it childish and left everything else alone. Who wants to play a childish game of football??? Loading screens are different, that's great and all but it's not a necessity.
Bottom Line: If you want to play a realistic football game and only own a wii, don't buy this. Madden 07 is so much better. It's outdated but way better than this.
