Amazon.com Review
More often than not, when a game is in development for more than three years, it does not live up to the hype. Bungie's Halo is the exception. Not only does it meet expectations, it greatly exceeds them. This sci-fi first-person shooter is a nearly perfect blend of gameplay, graphics, and sound.

The story revolves around the conflict between humans and an alien race known as the Covenant. The aliens have discovered a powerful artifact--on the ring-shaped planet called Halo--that will shift the balance of power, and it's up to the player to stop them. In addition to several first-person-shooter levels, the game offers numerous opportunities to engage in vehicular combat. Both the enemy and allied artificial intelligence are extremely impressive. Enemies will use the terrain and layout to put you in tight spots. Allies will know when to cover and aid you. For instance, if you hop into a jeep, an ally will know to jump in and man the turret on the back of it.

The graphics are exquisitely detailed, but only move at 30 frames per second rather than 60. The sound effects and voice acting are superb. The level design is among the best ever; most of the game is engaging and challenging without being frustrating. There's also high replay value thanks to the built-in single-player, cooperative, and deathmatch modes.

Much like the outstanding GoldenEye 007 for Nintendo 64, Halo raises the bar for console first-person shooters. All console action games will be measured against Halo for years to come. --Raymond M. Padilla

Pros:

  • Outstanding game design
  • High replay value
  • Impressive AI
Cons:
  • Several maps are used multiple times
  • Save functions could have been better implemented
  • Graphics move at 30 frames per second, not 60

Amazon.com Product Description
This action shooter takes place on a mysterious alien world. It offers a combination of team-based first-person-shooter gameplay (reminiscent of Tribes) and third-person vehicle combat elements. Gameplay kicks off with the player heading down to the planet's surface in a troop carrier, a la Aliens. As the player and fellow marines exit, the remaining troopers form a flank in reaction to an oncoming onslaught of human and alien enemies.

It's this smart AI system that makes for a noticeably unique gameplay feel. Another very nice feature is the seamless transition into vehicular elements. As you venture through mission objectives, a variety of enemy flyers and on-ground buggies are yours for the taking. Come across a vehicle and the camera will pull back to a third-person view as you strap in and motor through crossfire. A co-op mode allows a friend to join you in the single-player missions. For chaotic fighting action, up to four players can duel in split-screen deathmatch mode or link systems for LAN play. However you choose to hero your way through Halo: Combat Evolved, the action should break in your new Xbox in explosive style.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best,Ever.   July 14, 2008
I just got this game a week ago and have been playing it as much as I can ever since. It's graphics are great, the story is great, the gameplay is great, split screen is great. Now I haven't played it online(Don't got DSL or Broadband)so I can't talk about it.And don't think for one moment that just because it's a few years old it isn't any good, cause it's still one of the best and will probably be 2,3 decades from now.I've played the PS2 for a long time,I just got my X-Box last christmas(had a PS2 since MOH Frontline),and have played many Fps's and "Halo Killers" on it,and the most I've seen is a few games that MIGHT be AS good as Halo,I have seen none better(I'm not including Halo 2 or 3,because I haven't played them). If you are looking for a hardcore FPS this is it,if you are looking for an all around fun game this is it,if you are looking for a great game to play with friends this is it.What all this review is trying to tell you is that this game is worth every penny, nickel and dime you spend on it,period.Buy this game,if you don't like it you can sell it and get something else, but you most likely won't be selling it.

5 out of 5 stars Shockingly good   June 17, 2008
When Halo came out I was not much of a gamer, but my brother told me he had heard it was good so I gave it a chance. I credit this game for This making me a gamer because it was simply that good. It's one of those few games that you don't expect much, but end up being among the best games you play. It's so great that even if there had not being any sequels it would have still remain as memorable as it is today.

5 out of 5 stars Best PC Game ever   June 11, 2008
Halo was and continue to be the best PC game ever released. Best storyline, best drama, best graphics, great MP, simply great. If you never played Halo you have not experienced scifi yet. Outstanding work of creativity, soundtrack, plot, characters, what can I say !!!!???

5 out of 5 stars timeless   June 6, 2008
Halo is truly one of the best games ever made. Its getting kinda old, but I think its timeless, like doom. Several elements come togather to make this a great game. The graphics, the combat, the soundtrack, even the story, the're all perfect. Some of this is up to opinion, but the one thing thats undeniable is Halo's unique gameplay. Most first person shooters are very linier, the missions, the objectives, they are all planed out for you, like a movie. The problem with this is that the second time you play it, its just not the same, you already know whats going to happen. Halo is different. There is no word for it so I'll just say that Halo's combat is like a mixing bowel. Instead of planning the mission out for you, they give you an open battle field, and several ways to get throuhg. For example; on the level Assault on Control Room, you immerge out into a valley, not a planned senario, just a valley with various friendlies, enemies, weapons, and veicles in it. You have the option to get in a warthog(big jeep with a turret on it) and drive around shooting the enemy, you could find the sniper rifle and snipe the enemy, you could use your assault rifle to go out an meet the infantry on foot, you could even find the rocket launcher and take out the mortar tank, the possibilities are endless. Making this combat experience even more complex is the fact that every veicle, weapon, and enemy has their own strengths and weeknesses, which means you must think to get out alive. All in all, Halo is one of the best games ever to play in campaign mode. Sadly this game was made before xbox live, so theres no online, even though the multiplayer is breathtaking.

If you like shooters or games with engrossing stories, but this, what do you have to lose, its so cheap now lol.

5 out of 5 stars Halo Combat Evolved! Great!   June 2, 2008
Hi, I just beat Halo, I know, its a little late, we are in 2008 and halo 3 is the big thing. But I'm 13 and I was never allowed to play halo till now.
I beat this game in about a week and a half, and I say this is a very fun game and a great game.

Pros

Graphics are great only in that time it was made, if it was made today, the graphics would be better.

Multi-player beats every game at this game mode. With two player, its fun but not as fun as three and four player. Multiplayer has so many levels and games. Multiplayer is easily one of the best (maybe the best) in this game.

Campaign is very fun, the cutscenes are very realistic and very cool. i feels like a movie, really. The story is very addicting and the flood just made the story even better. Without the flood, the game would be just about shooting easy covenant aliens over and over again. The flood makes the game hard.

Cons

Music is horrible. Thats all I have to say.

Not enough aliens. All you fight are Grunts, Jackals, Elites, Hunters (barely), Flood (four different kinds) and senitals. Thats all. It might seem a lot but its not. I hope Halo 2 has more and better aliens.

Why is it M rated? There is blood and violence, and thats it. Barely any bad languague, and no gore. I heard there were T games worse than this. Its just weird.

I can tell why Halo got game of the year for 2001.
