4 out of 5 stars Great for backups   September 22, 2005

With the Gamesaves package you get two items: a CD full of Game Cube saves, and a funny looking memory card for the Cube itself. Personally, I tossed the CD right away -- I'm not interested in having somebody else play my game for me, but that's just me. I was interested in the device for its ability to transfer my own saves to and from the PC, as a backup system.

As a general system to back up games on your PC, and have an "infinitely large" memory card, the thing works great. The software is a little weird, but once you figure out which button to hit, transferring saves back and forth is easy and doesn't take too long.

There are two things to be aware of if you're planning on using the Gamesaves card the way I am:

First, let me mention that it's difficult to hack your saves on the PC. I'm no stranger to a hex editor, but Game Cube saves tend to have multiple CRC codes in them, which make your life hard. (If you don't know what that means, then just stick with "hacking your saves is hard")

Second, it doesn't seem to work reliably with all games. It may just be my unit, but when I play (for instance) Burnout 2, after every 2 or 3 saves it tells me that my save is corrupt. Running on a normal memory card, then copying the save from the normal card to the Gamesaves card using the Game Cube builtin menus, works fine. So be careful with using the Gamesaves card directly, since some games may not be compatible.

If you want to use saves from the Gamesaves CD or from the Internet, then buy this.
If you want to be able to back up your saves on your PC, and never buy another memory card, then buy this.
If you want to hack your own save games... you can try, but I'd recommend against it.
If you want to make banana smoothies, then look elsewhere.
