I miss Fantasy Draft October 6, 2005 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
This game is a blast. I had a lot of expectations after NHL 05 and they have met most of them. The realistic puck movement - where you can rock a slapshot off a player's body, and instead of them picking it up and bringing it back down the ice, they actually feel the sting and limp away - is awesome. The return of "on your own deking" is most welcome. With '05, you had to count on the thumbstick to beat the goalie. In '06 you are on your own. While there is very little that I would change, my two major beefs are the loss of the "big hit" and the fantasy draft. Half the fun of playing was knocking someone into the 5th row. In '06, the hits are wussy. You have to get a major-league running start, and you still don't get that much of a reward for it. Above all, though, I miss the fantasy draft. Being a fan of the game, my favorite part was creating a dynasty from lottery picks. It created some parity in the game and exposed me to some new ways of viewing my team. I'm hoping it is back in '07. Overall, this is still a great game and a lot of fun to play.
Surprising! September 28, 2005 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
So how do you release a new version of software based on a season that never was? For a program that is based on player statistics, I had serious questions about whether this was a good buy. I play NHL 2005 almost every night. NHL 06 fixes everything that I hate about NHL 2005. No longer do you have to skate in and autodeke and use the right thumbstick to hope to get a crazy shot past the goalie. NHL 06 brings back real skating with classic deking with the left thumbstick!! So much easier and better gameplay! The interface is completely overhauled. The initial speed settings were noticeably slower than NHL 2005 so I had to turn them up. Now you get special moves with the right thumbstick and star players can do the special moves. The whole game experience is better. More commentary by the announcers, and its not too repetitive (unlike the VERY irritating NHL 2005). More TV-like graphic experience. One wierd thing is the instant replay sometimes down't seem to be quite accurate for player placement. The team rosters show the current NHL rosters. Must have been difficult to turn it around that quick. Many of the teams are very different because of trades and the salary cap. I usually play as the Carolina Hurricanes. They are useless, especially Gerber, so I had to do some significant trades (I don't have to worry about salary cap, apparently). So what don't I like? The goalie flops down too easy and stays down too long, especially Martin Gerber. Thye changed the checking model to have sensitivity of the Y-button. Now it seems like they don't hit very hard at all, even when I turn up the checking and agression. There is also alot of play in the puck handling, even at high sensitivity. I also don't like the music as much as NHL 2005. Overall, I like this game very much. Not perfect, but much better than NHL 2005.
