2 out of 5 stars This game should be a top seller but...   November 4, 2006

This game has so much potential and seems like it would be very good in a wide variety of ways. However, it uses the 'Steam' authentication engine and steam does not work. I have installed and reinstalled this game about 5 times and the thing has wasted so much of my time I can not begin to tell you how frustrated I am. My other games work fine, even those with internet verfication. Do not buy this game or any game that relies on the steam network! Hopefully the game producers will get the message that the game consumers will not put up with this!

4 out of 5 stars A short, but welcome addition to Half Life series.   November 4, 2006

I actually enjoyed this game more than the original full version Half Life 2.

Pros:

1.) Lots of action with Gordon and Alyx trying to get out of City 17.

2.) Great graphic and sound if you have the system to run them properly.

3.) The last 1/2 of the game is an example of FPS gaming at its best. Wonderful! Lets hope for more of this in episode two.

4.) Comes on a DVD, so the install is fairly quick.

Cons:

1.) Because it comes on a DVD, you'll need a DVD player on your computer.

2.) Then after the DVD install, you are automatically sent to "Steam" where you must download the entire game again from the internet. I'm fortunate enough to have a fast internet connection, but if you have to use dial up, forget it; it would take forever and probably turn you off so much you'd never enjoy the game. (Thus a loss of one star on the "overall game" rating)

3.) You need a good CPU and video card to enjoy the game or else you may have turn down some of the video options to get the game to run without clipping.

All in all, despite my concerns, this game is a winner, and worth the reasonable purchase price. I can hardly wait for the next installment.

1 out of 5 stars What the hell?!!!!!   November 1, 2006

I bought this disc expecting to play the game but the only thing on this freakin disc is that idiotic Steam software. You have to install and download the game from the internet. Hey Valve you moron, not everyone has broadband access! What the hell is the point in releasing a game on disc when you have to download it off the freakin internet?!!!!! How about putting the god darn game on the disc and have a choice of upgrading if you want to. This game took 20 hours to install!!!!! I will never ever buy a Steam game again, this includes Sin episodes which has the same problems. To all customers who don't have broadband, do not I repeat do not buy this game unless you like waiting 24 hours to install it.

5 out of 5 stars Half-Life Episode One Review   October 28, 2006
Half-Life 2, Episode 1 is an engaging game with plenty of exciting cinematic moments that will send chills down your spine. It is as artfully done as Half-Life 2, with incredible environments, great characters, and engaging storyline. The sound-work is top-notch (as usual with Valve games), and the action is intense. I have thoroughly enjoyed playing the game as an extension of Half-Life 2 (which is a great extension to Half-Life!).

5 out of 5 stars Worth it!!!   October 3, 2006

While I was also sceptical about the 4-6 hour idea, the game is just so well done that I can't fault Valve for going the epispodic route. Would I have preferred HL3? Sure, but there is something to be said for not having to wait 2-3 years for the next one. . . As mentioned, the graphics are amazing on this expansion, noticable in almost every detail and in the lighting, which is incredibly realistic. Gameplay is great, with some interesting twists, old standby's like Barney and new combine baddies to overcome. All in all a great game; can't wait for episode 2! Oh, I couldn't get the game to load off the disc from amzn, but it was relaitively easy to get from Steam. . .
