Cant beat this for the price you pay September 27, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a review coming from a gamer who is coming off of a hiatus from gaming. I had originally planned on buying another PS3 title but as the title I wanted was sold out I figured for 20 bucks I would give Dark Sector a try.First off I want to state that the games storytelling leaves something to be desired. Much like Gears of War the story is very vague so if your looking for a deep emotional experience look to Metal Gear Solid 4 for your fix. For anyone who has played Gears of War and Resident Evil 4 you should feel right at home with this game. The camera Angle is always behind you which makes aiming a breeze.Shooting in this game is essential and its always fun to get into firefight when you use your guns and glaive. The real charm of the game comes in the form of what is called a Glaive. Essentially a oversized throwing star killing soliders and mutants alike never gets tiresome with the glaive, expecially once its abilities start increasing. Youll go from having a basic throwing weapon to a weapon that you can throw hard enough to cut soliders and mutants alike in half. Later on in the game you also gain other abilities such as maneuvering the glaive to precisely whereyou want it to go,and using elements such as fire, ice and electricity along with your glaive that can result in some pretty fantastic looking fight sequences on your screen. The puzzles that are througout the game will take basic use of your glaive and applying it to what you see on screen. The enmies can be quite smart in this game. Im on my second playtrough right now and have noticed the soldiers flanking hiding behind cover quite a bit. On a technical not the game looks great. With great lighting effects, and with some really fantastic textures Dark Sector will be sure to impress. There are some minor issues with textures looking muddy when your first enter a new area but other than that I was always pleased with what I saw.I did have some flaws with the game. Althought in the beginning of the game there are hints of what might be a really interesting story it seems that the developers thought you might be aware of all the characters backround information already so your can be left very puzzled after the games cinemas. There is also a feature throughout the game that is called The Underground. Essentially this isa place where buying guns, ammo, and applying upgrades to your weapons can be done for a price. While this sounds good the weapons can be very expensive and because of the lenght of the game your are not given adequate time to aquire all the weapons you can. I found myself purchasing only 2 weapons throughout the game, and thats all youll really need. While this game might not be on everyones "Must Have List" its certainly game that will put a smile on your face as long as you love over the top violence and for the cheap price its deffinitely worth picking up to hold you off untill games like Far Cry 2,Resistance 2, and Gears of War 2 get here.
Needs Some Polish September 19, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
The most important things in a game to me are graphics, gameplay, controls and consistency. I could care less about a story. You want a good story watch a movie or read a book. So I wasn't bothered much by the fact that the game has a terrible story.
The graphics though are impressive. Very slick. Good lighting, textures and particle effects. Some of the rocks formations that should have a rough flat texture appeared as glossy plastic though and some of the textures were repetitious, but that is forgivable.
The gameplay is ok. The game is supposed to be focused on the use of the glaive though I found it difficult to use and underpowered. 9 times out of 10 I was walking around with the shotgun.
The controls are terrible! This is what really did it in for me! They are terrible. Using the sixaxis for controlling the motion of the glaive is pointless. A novel idea but ineffective. What I found worked best was to use the analog stick. Unfortunately I couldn't always use it. For some reason half of the time I was forced by the game to use the motion detection of the sixaxis.
Second beef with the controls is when enemies get too close and latch on, you have to shake the sixaxis to get them off. The sixaxis motion control is a wii rip off and is pointless. I wish developers would stop using it. Then once you shake the enemy off it's near impossible to aim at them to shot. Shooting from the hip never seems to hit them and even if you are pointed right at them and you zoom in for a shot the camera angle always sets you looking away from the target. By the time you get a shot off you are dead or seriously hurting.
Last but not least, consistency. This was ok. The game got progressively more difficult and seemed to keep the same level of quality throughout the game, until the final boss battle. WTF??? The game jumped from hard difficulty to Extreme Ridiculously Hard. It was like one last slap in the face by the developers. Nice guys.
Bottom-line, it's worth $20 that it's selling for. Not much more though.
OFF THE CHAIN GRAPHICS September 5, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
THIS GAME HAD ALOT OF GOOD ACTION AND ALOT OF COOL GRAPHICS,THE BOSS BATTLES WERE SOMEWHAT TOUGH BUT WORTH THE FIGHT.
a very good game August 9, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this game at the bargain price of 20 dollars. I wasn't expecting much at the price and given the less than stellar reviews that I read. Well, the negative reviews were just plain wrong. This was a truly good game. The game play was great. And the graphics and sound effects were flat out sensational on the ps3 platform. I do have some quibbles with the choices made by the game developers. I prefer to be able to carry each gun purchased at all times instead of being limited to one two handed gun at a time. True, they allow you to switch off the guns saved in the locker at the beginning of each new chapter. But you never know until you begin to play the chapter which gun would be more useful. I prefer the good old fashioned method of most shooters to let you switch off to any of the possessed guns at any time during game play. And I would have preferred to be able to add more weapons instead of the three that I could afford to buy by the end of the game. And I would have preferred to be able to add further weapon upgrades as the game proceeded instead of being limited to the initial choices for the entire game. But, quibbles aside, the game was incredibly well done. It was fun to play, added innovative twists to the shooter genre and kept me busy for many hours that could have been wasted working. I loved the half life bundle on ps3. Resistance was my favorite ps3 game. However, this game held it's own against the best of them. The glaive was a nice new weapon. And the enhancements and abilities made it more useful at times than the guns. The enemies were varied and well crafted with many requiring strategy and skill to defeat. And, as said, the visuals were truly spectacular. I honestly don't know why the price was so low compared to other much more expensive and, in my opinion, worse games. But I'm glad it was. I'm on my second run through the game and may just continue to play on til a new game catches my attention.
Fun, but no replay value July 30, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is a fun game, no doubt. You could very much enjoy the whole 10 chapters of the game for the first play-through. The glaive is a unique weapon, especially with the Aftertouch power, which could be controled by using SIXAXIS function. The special powers and upgrades are fun to use. The difficulty is just right, plenty of ammo. The gameplay succesfully manages to keep player interested by gradually bringing in new stuff along the way throughout the entire game.
But that is all. The only unlockable you get after finishing the game is Brutal Mode. Aside from no new stuff, upgraded weapons and money don't carry over to the next game. Money is scarce, you could only upgrade or buy a few guns in one playthrough. The powerful guns become available late in the game, which means you have to save up from the first chapters if you want to try them, or start playing over again from the beginning if you already spent all you money. And once you applied an upgrade item on the gun, it's permanent and you couldn't check the effectiveness of each upgrade to the specific gun. If you applied the upgrade and you don't like it, the only options are sell that gun and buy a new blank gun or restart checkpoint.
In conclusion, this game could give you a fun experience. But maybe not a game you keep playing over and over.
