1 out of 5 stars This game so incredibly boring   December 15, 2008

The creators of this game arent too bright. A game should grab you from the beginning with lots of action. This game so incredibly boring. You spend most of your time just walking around the forest with nobody to shoot. You then have to find a car because there is so much useless ground to cover. I kept playing hoping it would get better but it never did. I recommend dead space or bioshock

4 out of 5 stars Give this game time and it will grow on you   December 15, 2008

Far Cry 2 has nothing to do with the original Far Cry game. You play as a nameless mercenary in an African nation in revolt. Most of the game, you're going to be tasked with various missions to shoot someone.

The engine is just jaw dropping at times. There is a complete day and night cycle in the game. You've got lush jungles, the desert and everything in between. Some of the waterfalls and other valleys are just so pretty. I have found myself just sitting there in water looking at the sky when a party of guards comes along to shoot me.

The game play is where I have to somewhat downgrade the game. Initially, until you figure out where to go and what to do, the game is confusing. However, if you give it about 6 hours, you're going to find that you're used to blowing through guard checkpoints, killing everyone in your way with ease. That's when this game really turns into an exploration / FPS. And it's fun to boot.

There's a set of side missions where you have to find a series of briefcases containing diamonds by which you can purchase new weapons. That works most of the time. Sometimes, it's really annoying because you just can't quite manage to jump up and reach a case that's in plain sight.

If you can get beyond the initial "WTF?", this is a solid first person shooter.

3 out of 5 stars Great environment, but lots of issues...   December 13, 2008

The environments on this game are really beautiful... leaves move under your feet, trees fall apart when shot - great explosions! It's a decent story that puts you as a mercenary in a country that's falling apart.

There is a lot of driving to get from mission to mission and often you'll spend more time driving than the actual mission... Which is usually drive here, get/kill/destroy that, report back. It's a bit of a slog sometimes but some fun to be had. Finding the many diamonds and Jackal tapes around the map is kind of satisfying.

Some annoyances are there are guard posts frequently along the road and *everybody* shoots first and asks questions later even if you're doing a job for their faction (in fact no distinction is ever made who the guard posts are working for). Also the *respawning* of said guard posts and their enemies *minutes* later after you've cleared them out. So if you have to back track be prepared to take them out again, or what I ended up doing is just blasting past them to avoid a fight.

The AI is a bit hit or miss, surprised it's not better in this "next-gen"! Also, they seem to have eagle-eye vision seeing you in the dark in bushes 100 yards away! Sometimes you'll meet cars on the road whose big tactic is to ram you then get out of their car and shoot you. More like swatting flies than anything,

Lastly there are the BUGS! Little ones like when enemies get out of their cars, they'll pop up and be standing on the roof, or I've seen enemies floating still in the mid air that ignore you.

BIG BUGS I've encountered is one that prevented me from getting a silver trophy finishing all of a certain mission type when I had... And another GAME STOPPING bug is now I'm not getting *any* more missions... I go to the headquarters where it says there is a mission (the only place), I go in and the door is closed and won't open!

Multiplayer is only O.K. - limited game modes and lots of noobs with grenade launchers. If you are a trophy fiend, know that they want you to spend a looong time in multi-player and more than one of the trophies seems impossible to get without putting in way more time then you likely would want to. In short, you won't be getting 100% trophies for this game...

Unless you can get an exceptional deal on this game, as I did, I would probably not recommend it. The AI and respawning are disappointing but the aforementioned bugs are inexcusable for a release game. As it is, I have to start over (though this time I guess I'll keep multiple save files) and I'm not sure I want to....

3 out of 5 stars FPS Rally-edition.   December 9, 2008

I really am trying to like this game. It has a great atmosphere, and wind, changing light (night / day) and sounds really immerse you in the world. But the actual gaming experience, it just doesn't work for me. I spend A) 5 minutes driving to get a mission, then B) 5 minutes driving to the mission, then C) 2-3 minutes actually shooting myself through the mission - struggling with the weapon that kicks so much I miss 50% of the time, when it doesn't jam, mostly looking everywhere for the near invisible enemies, hidden behind grass and trees and stuff, shooting at me - if I don't get shot down at a guard-post on my way to the mission, having to redo the entire thing from point A)... It is always fun to start fires, or make things blow up, and everything looks and sounds good, but most of the time I'm just cursing the game. I'll keep trying, but I think I'll play some CoD4 first, to actually enjoy the fps experience.
