4 out of 5 stars Three Words: Simpler, Shorter and Just as Fun.   December 13, 2008

I have always love Civilization games. They are interesting, challenging and enjoyable. If you are reading this review, then you maybe wonder how this console compare to the PC version. I have played over 20 games on this version, so I have certainly passed the initial phrase. Civilization Revolution is a more streamlined version and not as deep as the PC version. For example, there is no peasant unit. Roads are no longer built by peasants one square at a time; instead, you simply pay for the cost of the road and it will be constructed instantaneously. It is certainly a much simpler game (I really miss the fact that I can no longer destroy enemy's roads). The upside is that the game is much shorter and therefore you can finish one game in 3 hours, not 3 days or 3 weeks. I really like this. If I am still a college student on summer vacation, then I may not appreciate this "short" feature as much. However, for many of us who has a full time job, this is just great. I cannot tell you how many games I gave up because I don't have the time to invest in them. This is a simpler game, but not necessary an easier game. I played Civilization III and I was winning 80% of the Emperor level games and losing 90% of the Deity games. In revolution, I am currently winning 80% of the Emperor games and losing all of my Deity games.

The graphic and music of this game is just great. However, there are a few things I wish the game has kept. For instance, there are "unique" units, but they are only different in appearance and not as much on stats. This is one feature which I count as a pure "dumb-down" change. Taking the peasant units out has a up side and a down side. It makes the game simpler and faster. Taking unique units out, simply make the game simpler. I only see a down side in this change.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful game - hope to see more like it in the future   December 13, 2008
THis game is wonderful. It took a while to get used to some of the controls, but became quite manageable. Overall, the game is wonderful. Maps are a bit smaller than I would have liked, but graphics are decent, and there is nothing else like it on the PS3. I hope to see some future revisions of this game, or other similar strategy games. I have played 6 games thusfar, and with each game, I get to choose different characters or civilization strengths. each game is 1-4 hours long which is something I prefer as I don't want to spend days putting together my armies and cities. Roads, cities, armys all build rather quickly. great game.

4 out of 5 stars I like Civ Revolution, but want to love it   December 11, 2008
Have you ever played speed chess? Well, the console version of Civilization is essentially the same concept. While the pc version can take weeks to conquer the world or send that spaceship to another world, this version can take merely hours.

That is great to an extent. I love being able to sit down and play a quick game that still offers some strategic challenge. Not having to micro manage everything really has its advantages. The graphics are very well done, and its a blast getting into wars with your fellow neighbors and barbarian tribes.

Having said that, I do wish they would do away with the whole cutoff date of 2100. At that year, whatever civ is in the lead is assumed the winner. I have found the only reliable way to win the game before that cutoff date is to conquer other lands with your military. Its difficult to win by sending your spaceship to Alpha Centauri. Towards the end of the game you feel entirely rushed and that is unfortunate.

I remember playing Civ 2 on the original playstation and it was much more in depth than this game. So obviously it can be done. Perhaps in the future they will give us a more in depth console version. Until then I will enjoy Speed Civ. Or I suppose I could spend a fortune on a good gaming pc.

Despite the negatives, I still recommend this game. You will have fun with it despite its flaws.

5 out of 5 stars So much fun   December 9, 2008

I have been playing Civilization on the computer for years. I even got to meet Sid Meier one time. I agree that this is a scaled back version of the computer game but it is still a ton of fun. The big difference is that you can now play from the comfort of your couch or bed. I play from my bed while the wife is sleeping. This game is like chess on crack. Every game is different and it never gets old.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic game   December 5, 2008
I think the people who give this game bad ratings are trying to compare it to the PC version, which really isn't fair. This is an awesome game that has a lot of replay value. What's even better is that some of the expansion packs are free to download from Playstation store. I'm not much of a hardcore gamer, but this is one game I am definitely hooked on.
