5 out of 5 stars Brawl should remind us all why we play games in the first place   March 11, 2008
3 out of 5 found this review helpful

It's hard to explain in writing just how amazing a game like Brawl truly is.It really does have everything you could possibly ask for out of a game. And there is so much content to the game, you will be playing it for years to come.

The premise of Brawl is Nintendo characters are out to beat the heck out of each other. With Smash attacks, special moves with each character and a huge amount of items;such as red shells, baseball bats and bombs. To win a Brawl you must knock your opponet out of the various well detailed levels. It sounds simple but there are so many way to get the job done everyone will have there own unique strategy of doing things which really makes the game fun to play with three other players.

Brawl really hits it home with it's Huge roster! Not everyone is here. But the roster is very very well improved. There are less clones and more unique characters. And even guest characters Solid Snake and Sonic. And the regulars you would expect like Mario,Link and Samus. And maybe some you have no idea are even Nintendo characters like Pit and King Dedede(I knew they were nintendo characters).

Levels are also a huge improvement. There a lot more fun to play on this time and there is a lot more going on in the levels.Such as a huge top of an iceberg that you and three others are fighting on crumbles and falls down into the water. The fight continues, but watch out for a crazy big fish that wants to make you dinner! And if you like calmer levels you got those levels to,and a handful of ones from Melee. This game really gives everyone something to enjoy. And there is even a well done map editor.Giving you endless possibilities.

There are all sorts of modes to keep you busy.An improved Single Player that is more fun then ever combining platforming and fighting. And the single player modes are really where you will be unlocking most of your stuff for multiplayer action. And other modes like multi-man melee and classic mode return as well. There is also all-star and challenges, and you can do mostly all of this with a coop buddy!!

Wi-fi is also added into the mix, adding more replay value to Smash Brothers then ever before. Each match will be a new foe that has a brain and will most likely give you a heck of a challenge.

Graphics are also well done in Brawl.Brawl looks amazing. It's not perfection. But the graphics have a great style, and all these universes Nintendo created fits in well with one another. So from the story cut scenes to characters and levels,Brawl looks amazing.

Epic is the only word that could possibly describe the games music.Everything sounds beautiful. And the majority of the music is music you would want playing if you were in a real fight. It sounds amazing and it's one of the best sounding games made in recent memory.

Overall,I could go on and on about how amazing Brawl is,but people that read can only read so long before getting bored. So I'll sum it up.Brawl may not be perfect in every area. But it deserves a ten for it's heart, and the developers deserve all the credit through the hell they went through to bring this game to us.If you're a gamer of any kind.Buy Brawl!

4 out of 5 stars The reason to own a wii   March 11, 2008

A year and a half ago I stood in line on release day to buy a wii. I didn't buy it for the motion controls or the VC or whatever. I bought it because my gamecube broke and I needed my smash bros. fix. I might of also wanted Zelda. The point is since the release, the console has had a few titles that are good additions to the system. Super Smash Bros. Brawl is not only a good addition, it's the best game on the console.

The Gameplay is simple: Choose a Nintendo Mascot from Mario to newcomers Pit and Olimar, deal damage to your opponents, knock them off the stage, repeat. You'd think this wouldn't work and yet it's one of the best formulas out there. This formula isn't changed much in Brawl but it never really should be changed. The point of making a sequel to melee is to add more stuff to it. And add more they did. Brawl has a total of 21 starting characters and 16 unlockables. The newcomers are an excellent addition and the veterans are well chosen, except they dropped mewtwo. The game contains around 25 all new stages with a few from melee also thrown in. Most of them are excellent, however some are unoriginal or feel like the stage from the old game (yoshi's island). There are also new items, trophies, stickers, and music for you to use and unlock.
Theirs the standard multiplayer which is perfect as always, but this time Nintendo added a robust single player adventure mode, The Subspace Emmisary. It's a great idea, put all the characters together in a story mode. The downside is it's boring. The gameplay of it is just repetitive, and the plot line isn't very well written. However if you do need to go through the story mode with your favorite characters the Subspace Emmisary is around 8 hours long and unlocks most of the characters.
This is also the first version to allow you to fight online. Now I'm not sure if it's my wii or my location (Alaska) but it hasn't worked at all for me. Other reviews say it has so I guess it does... However if you play xbox live don't expect much online support at all. No voice chat, no gamertag. Just log on and fight annonymously.
The thing new thing that interested me most is the stage builder. This is a mode that allows you to construct your own fighting stage, you choose the background, the platforms, the music, and can save it to your wii or SD card to share. And apparently Nintendo releases one user made map a day to everyone to play on. So if you possibly get bored of all the maps in the game (which won't happen) you can have a different stage every day.
In conclusion, Multiplayer=awesome. Single player= not so awesome. Online=disfunctional. Stage builder=added replay value, not like you need it.
Super Marion Galaxy was Ok, Zelda was epic, and The Godfather had unbelievabely good use for the wii remote. This is just plain fun. Really fun. If you like having fun, buy this game. And if you don't have a wii, buy a wii, then this game.

5 out of 5 stars Not Another Melee   March 11, 2008

Super Smash Bros Brawl - henceforth called Brawl - was one of 2007's most anticipated titles right up until it was pushed back to a 2008 release date. It has been a number of years since Melee was released to great critical and financial acclaim for the house that Mario built. Brawl was anticipated to take everything Melee stood for and make it better, stronger, faster!

Overall, Brawl is exactly what you are looking for in a Smash Bros game. The returning Veteran fighters have been re-vamped with a graphical update and some move changes. Most of these changes are for the better, a few are for the worse (Mario gets severely de-powered with the loss of his on the ground spin in favor of his Mario Sunshine Water Launcher), and the presentation of the game overall is very clean and well executed.

For added value we are given The Subspace Emmissary. The premise of the story is simple: a strange army of little robots is destroying worlds and it comes down to Nintendo's Brawl characters to stop them before all the worlds are destroyed. Some very well rendered cut-scenes are interspersed among adventure style platform levels with Boss fights as the culmination of a level. The bosses are all significant villains from Nintendo franchises - and one very confused Rayquazza - and are engaging. While there could have been more variety to the stages, I found them to be challenging and entertaining.

The biggest new feature of Brawl is the addition of online 'brawl' mode. Connecting to Nintendo Wi-Fi will allow players to brawl with other players around the world. If you want to play with your friends, Nintendo has instituted the 'Friend Code' system, which, while it is a pain to work around, should be familier to most Nintendo-ites. If you are not familiear with it, a helful tutorial is included in both the manual and the game itself.

Brawl lives up to its hype, one of the few games, lately, that has. It is a value at $49.99 standrad fare for most games, and will be a consistent resident in your Wii.

2 out of 5 stars More of the same   March 11, 2008

I eagerly opened this game, started up - and was almost immediately disappointed by what became a theme of the game: it wasn't designed for the Wii. Don't get me wrong - it works on the Wii - but why are we back to using the analog stick on the Nunchuck for character selection instead of using the pointing abilities of the Wii remote??

As others have said here, it's a very slight improvement on Melee - if you own that and love it, just break it back out and keep playing. Save yourself $50. It reminds me a lot of the Madden franchise - slight changes every year, a little something new, but really not worth upgrading every single year.

I'm thinking of trying to sell or trade my copy, too - total waste of money.

So being a fan of nintendo since I was 2 years old this game is a must have for me. I've been conjuring up to play this game for such a long time and fnally, here it is. This game is by far, the best wii game to have come out yet. I should not have to explain anything else, if you have a wii, buy this, don't listen to the negative reviews, unless you don't like to have fun, then be my guest and shoot yourself. :D
