Just say no to the Digital Rights Mafia October 22, 2008 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I was so close to buying this game: it was in my cart and I was about to check out. But then I was was reading reviews to see what other games people who liked this game might recommend, only to find out about the malware called Securom. So I did a bit more research...
Thanks, but no thanks. Why does Amazon even sell malware like this?!? It is reprehensible.
Very fun, but not for the squeamish October 20, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
First, be warned that if you will be traumatized by mutilated dead bodies lying around, this game will not be for you. However, if you can handle that, this game is one of the better single-player first person shooters you will find. Graphics and sound are great. No bugs that I am aware of. Good story. Many hours of play. You will have a good time with this one.
Used Steam.... October 19, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I downloaded this game through Steam. I also purchased other games through Steam as well. What is nice is you reinstall your operating system and reconnect Steam (and hence all your games) with very little pain. I haven't done this enough times to see if Bioshock will quit working, but the other games I've purchased through Steam have all come back fine.
Bioshock plays well. As the spiritual successor to System Shock 2, it also reminds me of the fun playing Deus Ex/Deus Ex 2 series. Definitely worth a spin if you like these scripted FPS games - even has a choice of endings depending on your actions.
As to all these negative posts aboue DRM/Securom - I suggest you do your own homework (look up Spore's review on Amazon, for instance) and draw your own conclusions with what others are trying (or not trying for that matter) to influence you towards. If you never bought or played the game, why review it?
A $20 malware October 12, 2008 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
Bought the game, installed it, tried to play it, and it doesn't run. I searched for possible reasons on why the game wouldn't run; it turns out that the retail version of this game intentionally installs SecuROM on your computer, a piece of DRM (Digital Rights Management) software that impairs the use of your CD tray. As a result of this, my CD tray now doesn't recognize the Bioshock DVD when I try to run the game, and the game doesn't run at all.
Basically, I bought a twenty dollar virus.
Say no to DRM October 7, 2008 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
Buyer beware - the product description does not describe some important aspects of the game: This game requires an internet activation, so if you have no internet connection you can't play. This game installs SecuROM on your PC - a form of Digital Rights Management (DRM) which is controversial - its like a rootkit and can cause problems with your PC. Also uninstalling the game does not remove SecuROM - it remains on your PC permanently.
