1 out of 5 stars Mannequins with sticks.   September 21, 2008

I think my cellphone has better graphics than this game. It is amazing that anyone rated this game more than two stars. The players all have this greyed out shaded look - and they all look stiff and characterless. Movements are stiff and robotlike. Announcers are lame. Gameplay is routine. Wii controls are a bit of a step back compared to playing with a plain old controller. 2K Sports should give a refund to all who buy this poor excuse for a hockey game. Played NHL 08 on the PC and THAT was 100 times better (and I have liked 2K games in the past). The after play cutaways are so bad it is laughable as the guys look like stiff mannequins with no personality. Makes hockey look boring. Camera angles are too far away and just not satisfying. My son (who plays every hockey game he can get his hands on including all the NHL HITS Series, NHL Hits PRO , NHL 5, 06, 07, 08 PC & Console...etc) - first thing he said when he turned it on was "Dad, what is wrong with the graphics?". His freinds came over and were all laughing at how stupid the graphics looked (he felt a bit bad for asking for this game after seeing how bad it looks). My son was so excited to get thie first hockey game for WII but was very dissapointed to see how BAD it looks (regardless of the controls). This game has convinced me to sell my Wii (while there are still enough suckers out there to buy it) as the graphics stink and I just can't get over watching the previews for game in HD and getting the actual game in what looks like 64 colors in terrible resolution with poor animations. WII and 2K - you stink. I feel I have been ripped off with this terrible looking product and most of the Wii games are not getting any better graphics wise. And while I'm on my rant - EA is dumb for neglecting hockey on the WII.

2 out of 5 stars HMMMM   September 14, 2008

I was looking foreward to this game for so long. After getting it and playing it for one day I have to say I am very disappointed in it.
Graphics are crummy you cant read printed stuff on the scrren, the players all look alike and look as if they all have dark tans. Then there is the choppyness of the action on ice, at points during play the game sputtered and jumped.
The instruction manual, ha what joke 5 pages of nothing , didnt realy explain anything outside of using the controls. Took me and friend an hour to figure out how to change rosters(and we both are fairly decent gamers),and do other tweaks. Also players are missing from teams I noticed Nolan Pratt from the Sabres was missing and few other from other teams as well.
I wish EA Sports would put out a Hockey game for the WII now there's a hockey game to sink your teeth in!!!
If I had to do it all over again I WOULD NOT BUY IT !!!!

5 out of 5 stars 2k9 shoots....   September 13, 2008

2k9 SCORES!!!! The biscuit is in the basket on this one. 3 minutes into the game and I have my first goal. The controls are very intuitive and the moves are easy to perform.

For a first time Wii specific NHL video game, 2k9 has outdone themselves. The online capability would have been nice, but you cant beat the feeling of scoring a goal with your own slapshot.

Buy this game. Take it home. Put on the foil. And play this game.

5 out of 5 stars Best sports title yeat for WII and real sports fans   September 10, 2008

This is (finally) a great liscenced sports game for the WII that actually has the controls working as more of an afterthought. Getting the controls right on sports titles has been an impossible task for 3rd party publishers.
This game brings back the feel of the mid 90's hockey titles. I remeber when the hockey games were actually the most fun to play. Last year, controls simply got too tough on the other next gen titles, so I think uncomplicating them was and is the right move.

5 out of 5 stars WII + Hockey = My Dreams Come TRUE!   September 10, 2008

My dreams have finally come true. 2k sports has released NHL 2k9 on the Wii. I love hockey games, and was one of the few (apparently) that was a big fan of 2k8 (I had it on PS2, played like a wonder). Not only has this great series come to Wii, but 2k was even kind enough to give us the features of the series that was common on the other systems. Franchise, Exhibition, mini rink, pond hockey, shootout, all official NHL teams, world teams, old teams, etc. The only two elements that seem to be missing are the mini games which were so fun in 2k8, and online play. Supposedly, they did not attach the Wii edition with online play because they wanted to focus on the controls more than anything, and they would add it next year.

I say who cares if its missing it! I don't need strangers from around the world to enjoy my hockey game. Graphically, this looks fine. Its on a Wii, its a hockey game, the fact that it does not look like a graphic masterpiece is almost irrelevant. The presentation of the game is great. There is now an intermission report, cool introduction videos, stadium effects, referee videos, and things of that nature.

The controls are fantastic. I haven't quite memorized yet, but I know which button does what, and its all perfectly laid out. And boy is there satisfaction when a slapshot goes in! Passing with the lock-on function is great, doesn't take any time to get used to and actually works better than the old way of auto-pass/face player to pass function, which was generally a gamble. However, if you are stuck in the old ways, that function is still available. Honestly, I was worried this wouldn't work so well coming to the Wii, but its better than I could imagine. I'm so happy I got it. I would recommend this to anyone that is looking for some awesome hockey action on the Wii, or just awesome action on Wii.
