Namco loves Sony February 3, 2007 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
Notice my overall score is higher than the fun department.
Oops, did I make a mistake?
No sir I didn't.
This game is the follow up of the possibly greatest fighting franchise the game industry has yet to seen, and for the most of the parts it lived up to its name.
...yet it is somewhat disappointing in a way, but not because the game failed to deliver.
The soulcalibur team in Namco is considered to be one of the most technically acclaimed game developers in the world, and for their reputation's sake this game was nothing but the best in most parts.
The CG intro is one of the best I've seen. Graphics in game is probably to the limit of the PS2 system. Music is played by a real orchestra and is epic and breath taking. The core gameplay is still unchanged and in this case, a very good thing.
However, I find computer opponents irritating. Unlike in its prequel, in this game if you raise up the difficulty, the computers put on guard at the same time you attack, and then drop guard as soon as you let go of the guard. You perform a low attack, the computers react to it at the same time. To me, this isn't what hard difficulty means. It's humanly impossible to predict all the movements of your opponents, and because the computer acts in the way that is humanly impossible, you can never be engaged in gameplay because it is so obvious that you are not facing an opponent that is relatable to you. Even on lower difficulty, the computers pursuit the same tactic over and over again. They put on guard, and as soon as they block the first attack of your combo, they attack you. You might think thats how it is supposed to be. Please do me a favor and take out your old SC2 copy and compare them please. You'll see a difference. In this game it is always
block one hit -> attack as soon as possible
Repeat Repeat. Did I mention they try to grab you like once every 10 seconds? On harder levels you will be grabbed about 2-3 times per match on average, and even though you can neutralize the attempt by pressing an attack button at the precise moment, the opponent's lack of creativity and annoying repetitions don't serve purpose of "enjoyable experience."
Because of this obvious pattern that the computers follow, you might think fighting them will be easy, but the truth be told they are now a lot harder than ever before. For example, while I could defeat the computers on hard level in SoulCalibur2 with almost no trouble, I have more trouble fighting the computers in normal difficulty in SoulCalibur3. So I tried on easy mode one time to see, and it was as if I was in a practice mode fighting dummies. So while the easy mode is actually easier than in SoulCalibur2, the difficulty jumps up too drastically in normal mode, and it actually has 3 more difficult modes to play on.
The real issue is that while you can change settings to adjust the computers' difficulty, in main modes of the game it is set to a pre-determined difficulty, which I assume is either normal or hard. I had a lot of trouble unlocking features in the game, so I just gave up on the whole.
I was not enjoying this game one bit because it is too frustrating, mainly because I couldn't play the computers because it was either the choice of fighting retarded dummies or fighting opponents that predict my movements in humanly impossible ways, so now I don't even give an attempt to play the computers anymore. Now I only play this whenever I have company. But sometimes I wish I could enjoy playing the computers because it would be nice to unlock some bonus features after all.
It is obvious to me that the developers did not put in much effort into creating good computer AI. I am curious how could they have done that to disappoint me after doing everything else so perfect.
And last but not least, Namco should be ashamed for making this exclusive to PS2. No matter what the fan boys say, PS controller is the worst. Although I never regretted getting a free PS2 because the exclusive titles I just couldn't miss, if there are multi-platform games that I want, I always buy them for gamecube because the GC controller is way more comfortable than PS2's counterpart.
So there you have it. 4 stars for staying worthy to the best fighting franchise to date, but not 5 because AI is horrible and it is only for PS2.
Excellent game! January 11, 2007 As many people say, easy to learn, hard to master. The load time is long, but tolerable. I'd prefer a bigger button to skip screens; the start button isn't comfortable for me. The chronicle mode is nice, but more of the time you are waiting something instead of playing, waiting for it to load, waiting for your warriors to arrive, waiting for your warriors to enter the enemy fortress... I'd wish to earn more gold in the soul arena...but I understand that can't get rich by playing quickies. Aside from those, I had the best time fighting. So many fighters, new and classic. The creation of custom fighters is one of the best features, so many weapons and disciplines; I'd wish it could allow to store more custom fighters. I hope that SC4 will allow us to create custom fighters with different physiques and attributes, then you could have fat and giant ogres, lightning-fast-stabbing pygmies, dangerous buxom girls, spoiled bratty killers, hunchbacked hellish zombies, pale and skinny painted-face undead avengers,... The story mode is very good; my only complain is about the cheap attacks of the final boss, abyss. The graphics, music and sounds are excellent. Without this game, I'd be playing warcraft on my pc.
Great Game. January 10, 2007 1 out of 4 found this review helpful

I enjoyed the game a lot, it has almost endless potential because of the character creation.
Huge disappointment January 3, 2007 2 out of 6 found this review helpful
Soul Calibur, and its sequel were two of the best fighting games to come out this generation, but they took a leap backwards releasing the 3rd.
Making a game that was pick up and play, then turning it into something that you have to memorize every move, and every counter move was a mistake.
I tried many times to give this a chance but after a week of just being angry when i play it, I figured I'd get rid of it.
Beautiful graphically, but everything else is a thumbs down for me.
