THIS IS THE BEST TOMB RAIDER YET, AND THAT SAYS A LOT!!! June 9, 2006 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
I am an avid gamer. You play in 3rd person as Lara Croft. This game is not only beautiful, it is a BLAST! If your not shooting at someone, then you are solving puzzles or riding a motorcyle AND shooting. It has a little bit of something for everyone and super addicting. IT IS WORTH EVERY PENNY!!!!!!! BUY THIS GAME! IT IS AWSOME! THANK YOU EIDOS, YOUR BACK... ALL THE GAMES ARE GREAT, BUT HANDS DOWN- THIS IS THE BEST.
The best Tomb Raider game in years June 8, 2006 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
The Tomb Raider franchise has had a rough time as of late. Besides having Angelina Jolie prance around as Lara Croft in the movie adaptations (which isn't a bad thing to look at mind you) there hasn't been a decent Tomb Raider game since Tomb Raider 2 for the PS1. The last Tomb Raider game, the Angel of Darkness, was abysmal to say the least, but it looks like Eidos is trying to restore the franchise to it's former glory with Tomb Raider: Legend. The first thing you'll notice about this game are the mouth watering graphics. Yes, this is the PS2, and the graphics are simply awesome. Lara Croft looks better than ever as she goes back to doing what she does best: raid tombs! The game puts you back in the dark and mysterious tombs that made the franchise worth playing, and for the most part, they are well designed and challenging enough without getting too annoying to navigate. There's some motorcycle based levels as well, and the same puzzle solving elements and gunplay are well done as well. The game's story may not be the most well written material you'll come across, but what stops Tomb Raider: Legend from being something really special is the game's length. The game can be completed in a matter of hours or a whole afternoon, which is so disappointing it makes Activision's GUN look as epic as Final Fantasy VII. Despite it's maddening shortness, Tomb Raider: Legend is a step in the right direction for Eidos to restoring the franchise to the pedigree it deserves to be at, and maybe next time we'll have something really special on our hands.
Adventure in mediocrity... May 31, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
While i had fun playing this game, i didnt have THAT much fun.
Everything in this game has been seen or done better before.
The guns go 'pop' instead of 'boom' and feel grossly under powered. Especially when a panther or a human takes 15 bullets from point blank range...
The jumping 'puzzles' are pretty fun though thanks to the games awesome controls. All of lady Lara's moves are simple to pull off. Though there are more worthless moves than useful ones. Whats the point of doing 5 cartwheels or doing a handstand on a ledge?
Theres also a ton of different scenary and environments but sadly, they arent put to great use. They all look and play decent but nothing stands out or wows you.
Tomb Raider Legend is a pretty decent game but its definitely not one of the 'must have' games of the year. If i were you i would wait until a price drop or simply rent it for a weekend because of its short, 6-8 hour, length.
Back to Basics May 21, 2006 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
As a fan of the Tomb Raider games, I have the whole collection, and yes there are some major disappointments in the series that have made players turn away from the series in the past (the ones that come to mind are TR: Chronicles & TR Angel of Darkness) while each one had their moments of enjoyability, they weren't "true" Tomb Raider Games to me, but with Tomb Raider: Legend, the writers of the game seemed to have gone back to the concept of Tomb Raider and started it anew.
Now I know that previous reviewers have made comments concerning the shortness of the game. True, the game is shorter than the original, but the graphics seem to make up for it. I mean hey...Laura looks almost human in this game, so when you think about it, it kinda balances everything out.
Another upside of the game is that there is something specific that she is after that we the players know about from the onset of the game, instead of us learning at some point halfway through what it is she is after.
She is after the fragments of a sword that may or may not be some version of Excalibur, which will help her a great deal at a later point of the game, and while she is doing that, she is also exploring the very reason she is doing what she is doing and what it was that really killed her parents, and how her parents deaths several years ago are connected with what she is doing in the present.
Of course a few changes that players of the classic games need to get used to are the different controls...well to be sure, certain controls in the older games have been deemed unnecessary in the new flow of the game (to me the side stepping or the lack thereof isn't a major factor). Another thing that players of the classic games need to get used to is that when you move an object (like a crate), it's not on a set track any more; if Laura sways while moving the crate, the crate sways with her.
Is it different from the previous games? Certainly.
Does the shorterness of the game make it any less enjoyable? No.
Does the different controls take away from the experience? Not to me.
Do the better graphics add to the experience of the game? When you see Laura rise up out of a pool of water, and actually see little droplets of water running down her face, the individual strands of hair blowing in the wind, you tell me.
So forget about the changes in the game, and enjoy it for what it is, while it's not like the original game, I don't think it's going to go the forgotten road of "Angel of Darkness" and "Chronicles".
Controls are impossible May 16, 2006 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I love the game it' awesome the whole gun thing and Lara Croft is sorta pretty,But the way you push a crate is hard the targeting is difficult. When she tosses a grenade you normally look up to throw higher ,but instead of going farther it falls near her causing her to take damage. Also when you look up and try to use her cable thing it's hard to attach it to your target. Other then that good game should have been longer ,but it's good for a third person shooter.
