5 out of 5 stars Well constructed simulation.   December 26, 2007

I bought this title for my new PS3 to replace 2K6 and 2K7 for the Xbox. This review will largely focus on the differences and improvements between the PS3 version and the older lesser versions. Reviewed at 1080i on a 53" CRT RPTV.

1) The graphics and engine are substantially improved over prior incantations. Player appearance is far sharper, as is general presentation. A substantial amount of detail has been paid to little graphical items - for example the cameramen on the sidelines are perfectly rendered and move appropriately, players move from the bench to the scorers table after you order substitutions to wait for the dead ball, after timeouts your players move back onto the court as the mascot/cheerleaders leave it, finally arenas are well rendered with accurate center logos (e.g. UCLA first to 100 championships). Also the animations are far smoother and more creative. Overall much improved.

2) Audio is generally comparable to prior versions of the game, and this is very good as the prior games had good sound design. The biggest difference is this game actually supports DTS (even though the box only says Dolby Digital), this produces sound that is generally richer and fuller. All sound options are individually adjustable (Commentary, PA, FX, band, crowd noise, chants, player chatter, etc.) thus allowing you to create the blend that you find most enjoyable. Teams fight songs are included and played back at appropriate times. The commentary is also generally solid and features the same guys as 2K7.

3) Gameplay is much more realistic than 2K7. In 2k7 on Xbox it would not be uncommon for me to amass 40+ steals in a game as the AI was reckless with the ball, in 2K8 for the PS3 the AI is much smarter with passes, and steals are closer to 10 per game. Offensive AI is much improved the AI cycles the ball well and takes good shots with open shooters. The improved animations are also huge with gameplay, they allow a wide variety of layups, dunks, fadeaways, and post shots that can be utilized to good effect. The control scheme is complex, but once learned is extremely effective. As other reviewers have mentioned the game stresses shot release for the accuracy of all shots, this causes some people trouble with layups, but once practiced layups do go down with regularity. Overall gameplay has maintained all the good of 2K7 and fixed most of the bad.

4) Game modes: Quick game - can choose any 2 teams (includes all D1 schools, plus dozens of historic teams) and play a quick game against the computer or another person. Legacy - not yet tried but was great in 2K7 and I have read it is even better in 2K8 with improved scouting and an AAU league. Practice - this allows you to run various drills (Freestyle, Fastbreak, Freethrow, etc.) that will help you master the control scheme and pick up the subtleties of shot release, ball placement, and picking the right shot at the right time. All-American Training - similar to practice but helps teach certain skills such as isomotion and post play. Online - not yet played. Overall great variety and replayability.

5) Other thoughts: 2KShare is a network service that allows users to post and share files with each other. You can share legacies, playbooks, and settings to help others and show your achievements. The biggest and best feature of this is ROSTER DOWNLOADS. 2K cannot officially include player names (default SG4, C45, etc.) but they have made it extraordinarily easy to download them and add them later. The roster loads automatically and allow you to actually use real players in games (e.g. Chris Douglas Roberts, Kevin Love, OJ Mayo, etc.). Most names are already recored for the in game commentary and will be used appropriately. This is a tremendous improvement over the XBox 2k7 game, and makes the game far more enjoyable.

In conclusion this is an exceptional game and a substantial improvement over the 2k7 variant. The learning curve is fairly high, but you are rewarded with exceptional control over the game when you do master it. I highly recommend this game to any college basketball fan.

3 out of 5 stars good, but not much different from 2k7   December 25, 2007

This is a must have game for college basketball, gamer, fans. However, I wouldn't spring for 2k8 if you already have 2k7. Besides the updated rosters, there isn't a lot that excites. There are some clipping issues, such as passes going through your defenders facing away from the ball. For the PS3, I find the free throw motion to be neat moving the controller.
I'm a hoops fan and enjoy the game, but do look for improvements in the future.

3 out of 5 stars Pro's & Con's   December 20, 2007

Con's
There is only one real Con to this game, but its a big one and the most important aspect of a game. The Con is that this game has to be one of the hardest sports game I have ever played. You can dominate the game on the lowest difficulty setting, but when you move up to the starter difficulty, it is a night and day difference. The computer can rain 3's in your eye all game long while you must have no one within 5 feet of your player or else you have no chance of making the shot. You can even have your hand all up in the computers face and they will still drop in. Basically they make shots almost at will while it is very difficult for you to make shots. I think games should be difficult but not on the second difficulty setting. This game will cause you to go crazy. Controllers will get broken, holes in the wall, broken hand, not fun.
A Pro to the game is that it does have good graphics. There are a lot of teams and a good legacy mode.

I always buy EA games, it looks like I should have stuck with them for this game.

2 out of 5 stars Ho-hum   December 10, 2007

Its really hard to get a bad review from me, but there are so many things wrong with this effort from 2K.
Cons:
I'll only talk about 1 problem so this isnt a book of a review. A lot of the other problems in the game follow this same formula. During Legacy play, you practice things such as shooting, rebounding, post defense, etc to develope your players. This should have been fun, but 2K dropped the ball here. I have now tried the 3-point shot drill many times (maybe 40) and still havent passed it once. That might be besides the fact, but there are good reasons it is so difficult and it isnt my skills. The camera pans in everytime you shoot so you cant see your player anymore. The player will also move (sometimes a lot) after they shoot and you will have to wait for the camera to pan back, wait for the rebounder to get you the ball back (takes 2-3 seconds, which is an eternity), set yourself- making sure you are in the circle they want you to shoot from, then you can shoot and hope you remain in the circle during your shot. This is a problem, folks. In shooting drills it is very important to 'flow' and how did 2K expect us to flow when there is so damn much going on at once before, during, and after each shot?? It kills the fun and makes the game more of a hassle than entertainment. The menus are frustrating as well. For instance, they make you hit "OK" sometimes when "OK" is the only option. "EXIT" is another one they like to make you take time to press. I hope you follow what I mean here. If you only have 1 option, why do they make you think about it? haha. Geez.

Pros:
The actual gameplay during games is great. Fun. The graphix arent anything new, but good. There are plenty of teams and conferences to choose from so chances are your favorite team is in the game (go Xavier). Some of the other drills are fun, even if there are those few that will have you more angry than anything.

Bottomline, this game is great if you only focus on actually playing the actual games, but there is totally too much frustration going on that its hard to WANT to turn the game on in the first place. I would recommend trying EA's college basketball game first. I personally havent played it yet, but this game by 2K isnt what you're probably looking for. You'd have better luck trying the other game.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Game   November 30, 2007

This is a good game. Like every game it has its downfalls, it can be a little glitchy sometimes but not that bad. It is very fun to play, I love college basketball and it is fun to play with your friends in a tournament setting. Im waiting to play march madness, but this definetly will get me through this season and I am happy I bought it.
