Gorgeous, but flawed September 16, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
The first thing everyone (or at least "I") noticed about this game was the graphics. When it comes to creating pretty, intensely visually realistic games, Ubisoft are basically the masters. Look no further than the Splinter Cell series or the Prince of Persia games for proof, both of which have graphics that still look impressive years later. If all you're really concerned about is a playable game to drool over, stop reading right now and just buy it. You'll be more than happy.
The plot is basically as follows: you're playing as a medieval assassin utilizing some kind of crazy medieval version of free-running who targets powerful rulers suspected of corruption. There's also some time-travelling aspects, which are interesting, but don't do a whole lot of plot advancement.
The game controls like a dream, not unlike the Prince of Persia games (I'm sorry to compare them so much, but they are honestly very similar). You'll rarely have a moment where you'll get frustrated because the game's being unresponsive. Altair's movements are fluid and lifelike. The only downside control wise are the fighting mechanics. With some practice, you can battle dozens of guards without taking a scratch; the fights are just too easy and repetitive.
Speaking of repetition, that's a huge downfall for the game. Every assassination mission is almost identical in their execution. You'll be in vastly different surroundings, but each one will probably be handled the same way. This game isn't too linear (you can choose which missions you want to undertake to get the required amount of info about your target) but the missions are constructed nearly identically.
If you can get over these issues, the game's still a lot of fun. It's not often where you can honestly say that just controlling the character is fun, but this is definitely the case. The main plotline doesn't take very long to get through, but there's also a lot of extra stuff to keep you busy. Some of this is a little dated (why are we still collecting flags in a next gen game?) but it will definitely keep you occupied and might even turn into some kind of obsession. Plus, the game's now really cheap, and you get a lot of great game for this price.
Repetitive plotline September 15, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I agree with other people that the visuals of this game are impressive and this makes the first few hours of the game pretty enjoyable. However, once you learn the basics, everything seems to get repetitive. There is probably 1 or 2 fight moves which makes your xBox play sound like this - "x x x x x x...x x x x x ...". There are 9 major assassinations and a bunch of other smaller assassinations. Every city looks remarkably similar to the next and the plot is entirely forgettable. You can buy this game and it's cheap compared to the other XBox games out there. But keep in mind that this game won't last more than 6 hours in your Xbox before you get entirely bored of it.
Very addicting! September 2, 2008 This is the kind of game that is hard to stop playing. I've caught myself on this game for several hours at a time!
I do see that is does have a couple flaws! It's the same thing over and over again. While the story changes as it goes a little you pretty much end up doing the same thing all the time! Yeah it's a different guy and different place but you have to do the same thing. There isn't much in the way of switching things up all that much.
Regardless of that fact, it's a fun game and there is a LOT to do in the game to keep you going. I would recommend this one to anyone who just wants to chill and enjoy a game. It can get a little intense though but not too much.
Nice graphics, just repetitive August 29, 2008 0 out of 4 found this review helpful
I thought that this was a really cool game. The graphics come out at you, but as the game goes on, you keep having to pretty much do the same things over and over again. I stopped playing it b/c I got tired of it. You fight people, run away until you get invisible, then go somewhere else and do it all over again. Great game if you like that kinda stuff.
How has this not been reviewed yet? August 29, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Well, I just noticed this hasn't been reviewed yet, which seems odd, so here's a quick review, just for the sake of itself, since this is an interesting, quality game that deserves a little notice.
This game has a lot going for it, and clearly the designers worked hard on it to make a good game that's a little bit different from the ordinary. I've seen reviews on other sites where they often mention that the game is repetitive, and this is true and probably its major downfall. The fact is, it's got a lot of attention to detail, and things like a button specifically for gently pushing through a crowd is just really unique and makes the game stand out. The setting in the holy land during the crusades is a great idea, and the fact that it has kind of a super- or sub-story in the modern world makes it even more interesting. If you've seen the trailer for this game (which is the start screen FMV) you can see some of the characteristic game mechanics, and it's really cool playing as this assassin leaping through rooftops and jumping off the tops of churches and mosques, but the fact is that there is a certain number of activities available to you, and you go over them again and again. But if you like it, as I did, are looking for something a little different, and have a certain measure of patience required for stealth games, you can look past its flaws.
