Extremely Good September 15, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
this game is an extrememly addictive game.i was lucky when i saw it at a gamestop since this game is very hard to find now. i bought it used. i have to agree with all of the reviews out there saying this game is very good. i have to say in my opinion this is an extremely GREAT game, although i have to warn you the game gets VERY HARD so beware. but that wont be a problem for those who like challenges in a game. overall i cant stress how much fun you will have with this game so if you find it at a store DO NOT hesitate to get it...its that good. for a used one you can probably pay a good $35ish but for a new one you will probably have to dig in to your pocket for a good $50>. so in closing just go out and get this game its great for adults(like me) or for kids( although kids will seem to get bored with it since it does get hard).
Great game, and incredible replay value September 7, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Advance Wars Dual Strike is a turn based strategy game that pits your army against varying commanding officers in a series of battles over a vast array of landscapes. Its lighthearted nature (many of the commanding officers are quite young and speak in slang) makes it appropriate for kids, but don't let this lightheartedness mask what is an incredibly deep and very enjoyable game.
The basic concept of Advance Wars is simple--you play as a CO (commanding officer) and are given control of an army during a battle. You're up against a CO of the Black Hole Army and can win the battle either by destroying all your enemy's combat units or by taking over their headquarters. The maps have varying terrain that adds an element of complexity to the fights (forests you can hide in, mountains from which some units can see long distances, etc) and forces you to deploy and move your units strategically, and you can take over cities and factories along the way to boost your resources and unit production capability.
A new concept in Dual Strike (I believe this is the 3rd Advance Wars game, though this is the first I've played) is the dual CO battle. Fairly early on in the campaign mode you're introduced to the concept of a tag team battle where you've got control of 2 COs and can switch them and use them for their varying abilities (Dual Strike features a whole slew of COs, each with special abilities and attributes that can aid you in battle) during the course of the fight. This adds yet another element of depth to an already complex game.
Advance Wars: Dual Strike features several single player modes of play, a multiplayer mode, and an option to create your own maps. The gameplay really is incredibly deep as your COs improve over the course of several hours of play (and remember, there are many COs). This is a very deep game, and should provide many hours of entertainment.
PROS:
-The combat system is simple, intuitive, and easy to use. It takes very little time to get the hang of, yet the battles can and do get incredibly complex. -The maps are easy to navigate, and stylus is used very well to click on and move your units around the battlefield with incredible ease. -The many modes of gameplay, vast array of COs, and map creating options give this game a lot of staying power--this isn't one you'll play a couple times and then leave alone. -Even though its a war game the content is appropriate for people of all ages. -CO abilities add even more depth to the strategy of the game, and the dual CO option (and the ability to launch combo attacks with both of them) makes the battles even more fun. -Some of the battles can be fairly quick, meaning you can pick it up and play a battle even if you don't have much time to play.
CON:
-The slang some of the COs use gets tiresome quickly and the dialogue is, overall, pretty lousy. It's annoying, but the rest of the game is so good that it's not hard to overlook.
As of this writing this game is pretty difficult to find, even used. If you see it, though, give it a shot--this is a classic.
If You See It In A Store, Buy It June 13, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Despite my critical nature, I couldn't find much wrong with the game. I have to say that it's one of the few games that I actually don't mind picking up to play even though it was one of the first games I've bought in my 60+ collection.
My only complaint is that the Computer AI is extremely predictable over time, and it's difficult to get stuck if you repeat a level over and over again. That's not much of a complaint though, because some people welcome the difficulty, limited as it seems at times.
Past the storyline gameplay, there are other modes and missions you can do to change it up if you get tired of the storyline format.
I wasn't much of a platform gamer before I bought the DS, and even then, most of the games I own exist in my collection simply for collective purposes. I haven't played any other version of Advance Wars on any other platform, but this game exceeded my expectations.
If there's any game on the DS that should have a perfect rating it's this one, and it's a little unfair that Phoenix Wright has a full 5 Stars while Advance Wars got docked a portion of the 5th Star. The lasting appeal of this game is incomparable to Phoenix Wright, as you probably will never pick up Phoenix Wright again after beating it a first time.
Aside from rarity issues, a good way to analyze the quality of a game is the price fluctuation from its initial release to current pricing. Advance Wars was released before both Phoenix Wright and Trauma Center in 2005 at a $29.99 price tag. It was re-released in late 2006/early 2007 (I think that time frame is correct) at an extremely modest $19.99 at EB Games / GameStop. Now it's hard to find a brand new copy in any store since its production was halted some time ago. It was a good buy at its retail price, a steal at its re-release price, and still an excellent choice at whatever price you can find it for now, an average of approximately $35.00 according to Amazon.com. Enjoy it, it'll be a classic.
One of the best DS titles May 23, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This game has a "History" screen, which logs, among other stats, the total time spent playing the game. My counter just passed 229 hours and 8 minutes.
Addictive. Can be played in long periods or short bursts. Highly recommended to anyone with a DS.
Great Game March 20, 2007 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Picked it up after seeing the great reviews it got and found myself agreeing. I never played any of the earlier advance wars games, and it came on real easy. I hear using the touch screen isn't popular with folks who played the old game, but for me it was the best method. Very enjoyable.
