Super Smash Brothers Brawl: The Best One Yet March 13, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I will try to be brief here. Super Smash Brothers Brawl is an almost 5-star game, coming in as the best on the Wii console. But I said almost 5-stars. Why not 5? Read on for the answer.
First things first. Brawl is still mainly a multiplayer game, and a very good one. I will talk about this mode first.
Multiplayer: 9 out of 10
The main mode here is brawl, of course. There's also special brawl, which has been dramatically improved. You can choose from a variety of settings, and you can have several settings on at once, unlike in Melee, where you could only do them one at a time. Choose your character, stage, and then brawl.
Single Player: 6 out of 10
In this mode, you will find Classic Mode, Adventure Mode, and the Events, among others. Classic Mode is basically the same as before, which is to be expected. Adventure Mode is now the Subspace Emissary, which can be a little long as it's a whole game by itself. Unfortunately, it can get rather boring. You can also do Adventure Mode with a partner. The events are basically the same idea, but there are now some co-op events.
Now for the characters and stages.
Character Roster: 8 out of 10
The character roster now has a total of 35 characters, 10 more than in Melee. You start out with 21, and have to unlock 14. There are old ones like Mario and Link, new ones like Pit and Olimar, and two 3rd-party characters, which you have to unlock, even though they're on the case. They are Solid Snake and Sonic the Hedgehog. My main disappointment with the roster is that clones were not eliminated. Luckily, the only real clones are Toon Link and Ganondorf. All the others have enough differences to avoid my definiton of a clone (even Ganondorf has his own final smash).
Stage Selections: 9 out of 10
There are a total of 41 stages in Brawl. You start out with 29 and have to unlock 12. 10 of the stages are Melee stages. Some of the new stages are Delfino Plaza, Rumble Falls, Sky World, and Pictochat. This selection can be increased by making stages in the stage builder, which I thought was a nice edition to Brawl.
Now some of the technical stuff.
Graphics: 6 out of 10 overall, 9 out of 10 for the Wii. Sure, there not super graphics, but there fine for me. You can't get much better on the Wii.
Controls: 10 out of 10
With four control schemes, you can pick whichever one feels the most natural. You can choose from the Wii Remote and Nunchuck, Wii Remote held sideways, the Classic Controller, and the Gamecube Controller. I'm also extremely glad they didn't use all the motion capabilities of the Wii Remote. It just wouldn't work for a game like Smash Bros.
Conclusion: Super Smash Bros Brawl is a great upgrade, even though it plays like Melee. It's suppost to be a Smash Bros title, not a completely different game. If clones had been eliminated and adventure mode was a little better, this would have been a full five stars.
Won me over March 13, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I waited a couple days to write this, because it took a long time for me to form an opinion on this game. The first impressions I had were based on the single player, which is definitely not the game's strong suit. There's no shortage of things to do in the single player mode, but all of them can get a bit redundant. The adventure mode, for example, is huge and sprawling, but each stage is essentially the same thing, and it got old to me rather quickly. The next thing I tried was the online play, first with a friend code battle and then a random opponent. It's fun, but it's severely limited by the lack of chat/voice functionality. I had to use my cell phone to communicate with my friend while we were playing. However, last night I brought the game over to a friend's house for some live, in-person, 4-player action. That was probably the most fun multiplayer gaming experience I've ever had. We played for about 4 hours straight with no breaks and it didn't get old. The multiplayer portion of this game is so phenomenal that it, in my opinion, makes up for any other shortcomings. PS: for all the people complaining about lack of wii-mote motion control, I understand why they left this out now: it can be played with the Gamecube controller, allowing for even more players to join in even without extra wii-motes! However, I'm removing 1 star from my rating based on the fact that 1 player isn't stellar and this game seriously needs a chat function for the online matches.
Fantastic update to smash March 13, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is a truly incredible game. It takes a fantastic game, and improves on it in nearly every way. The level of polish is nearly shocking, as nearly every possible improvement has been made.
You can't pick this up expecting it to be like any other game you've ever played- its an entirely unique experience. A bunch of negative reviews on here seem to be people criticizing it for not being 'a true next gen title'. Thats just a very narrow-minded look at the graphics, which are the least important part of this game. Like every Smash Bros game, its true magic is that ANYONE can play it- someone entirely new to gaming can pick up a controller, button mash, and have a great time even when playing with experts. The replayability is simply amazing, and rare in a time when most new games focus on being the prettiest thing out there instead of the most fun. Pick it up, play with friends, and just enjoy the game!
fun game March 13, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
well, if you like the first one, this one is similar but has enough new things to make it fun.
Simply Amazing March 13, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
So far I have had the game for about two days, and I absolutely love it overall. There are no major issues that I have found so far, and all of the content is very much appreciated. Here's a list of the pros and cons:
Pros:
1) Its pretty much the same thing as melee. Which, in my opinion, is a very good thing. Most of the mechanics remain the same.
2) The music is phenominal. Its almost worth paying the money just for this. Over forty musicians were brought together solely for this game, resulting in fantastic compositions. Almost everthing I have heard is orchestrated, i have not reconized anything as fake.
3) Variety, Its almost impossible to run out of things to do in this game, Whether it be wifi, stage building, unlocking characters, or other events. I've nearly wasted all of my afternoons playing this and I haven't even scratched the surface.
Cons:
1) The biggest dissapointment is Subspace Emmisary. I was expecting a whole lot more, but instead I got this repetitive and tedious platformer-like majig. Maybe I was just expecting too much...
2) Unfortunately I have noticed that it is considerably slower than melee. Some of the combos I created with Samus were nearly unexcecutable. The difference isn't much watching it, but when playing it you definitely notcie it. The good thing is I have since then adapted to this, and I'm back at the skill level I was at in Melee. It only took a day in a half.
3) Wifi is a dissapointment. I really wish there was a sort of leaderboard at least, but nothing of the sort exists. The actual battling is fine, but a bit laggy at times. The computer fills in slots if there aren't four players present in battle, dissallowing duels.
Overall, I highly urge you to buy this product even if you only have the slightest bit intrest. I can almost garuntee you that you will enjoy it one way or another. Everything is highly polished, and works phenominally.
