5 out of 5 stars 5 stars, must-have for SW fans   July 2, 2008
There aren't a lot of PS2 games I constantly go back to playing, but I can't seem to get enough of this one. All the levels are interesting, the controls are great, and it's easy to give a controller to a friend and teach them how to run and shoot.

Ever wanted to drive an AT-AT? Done. Shoot from a Star Destroyer? OK.

The only drawback is the space levels - the linear method to win these battles against the CPU without ever destroying another starfighter or capital ship is kinda boring, but the flight mechanics are tough to master.

5/5 - if you like SW, you need to have this game.

Star Wars Battlefront 1 became one of my all time favorite video games after the first few times I played it. Naturally, I was stoked for Battlefront 2. Unfortunately, it was a HUGE disappointment.

There are so many things LucasArts tried to do with this game that just didn't work out. The HUD on the screen is next to worthless. Everything gets in the way, the mini-map is terribly cluttered, and it only shows the total ammunition you have for each weapon, not the amount of ammo in your current magazine. This is especially frustrating, seeing as half the time I get killed it's because I have to reload in the middle of a firefight with enemy troopers.

The actual gameplay is terrible as well. Everything moves much faster in Battlefront 2, including the mounted guns and gun emplacements, which, unfortunately, are also a lot weaker and don't do much more damage than a blaster rifle. No longer can you issue orders to friendly troopers either. Sometimes I'll see a group of soldiers standing around a short ways from the battle not doing anything, and because there's no "follow me" command or "move out" command my only options are to head into battle on my own and hope my troopers join up with me later, or execute them for dereliction of duty in frustration.

One of the dumbest things in Battlefront 2 is the "goal" for each character class. For example, if you kill 6 enemies with your blaster pistol, you get an upgraded sniping pistol that does more damage than your primary weapon. A cool idea, but the dumb part about it is you have to complete each goal 6-10 times before you even get the upgrade, and after you've gotten the upgrade a certain number of times it becomes your weapon when you spawn. Basically, after you've played the game for a few days and have gotten a lot of the upgrades for good you'll be able to kill 15 or more enemies each time you spawn, no sweat. Where's the challenge?

Another negative about Battlefront 2 is the inability to play as "special classes" such as the wookie warrior, or droideka, until you've killed a certain number of enemies. The "heroes" (jedi, sith, and others) are cool at first, but even they get boring. Where regular troops have an energy meter (so they can sprint short distances!), the special characters have a Force meter. You can only push so many enemies out of the way with The Force before your jedi gets tired and has to wait for it to regenerate. What a stupid concept. Oh, and the heroes' health is measured by how many enemies you kill. In other words, every hero is a vampire. If you run into trouble and get hit by a Stormtrooper, you can get back to full health simply by slaughtering a group of enemies. Another stupid concept.

The only positives in this game are the improved enemy AI, the new maps (these are actually really cool, and would have been AMAZING in Battlefront 1), the "Capture the Flag" and "Hunt" (kill the native population exclusively in the map you choose) options for different maps, and the Magnaguard character class. Overall, a decent game... but only if you haven't had the Star Wars Battlefront 1 experience.

3 out of 5 stars Overall a good game   March 28, 2008

I would think that this game has a little issues like the areas that you play in are a lot smaller than the origanal star wars universe and there are a few bad gliches like when I was doing a death star flag battle I was Obi-Wan Kenobi and I had the flag and I was going for the droid's base and the control panel got blown up I jumped and I tryed to jump again and he didn't so as a result I started falling and died. But over all its a good game.

4 out of 5 stars A lot of fun...   March 26, 2008
I am typically a PC gamer and have had trouble, in the past, playing FPS games on a console game controller. This game has been such a blast to play with my son in splitscreen mode that I was able to work out my game controller issues fairly quickly and am now a lot better at moving and shooting at the same time using my left thumb to aim the gun. I like the way the training built up the complexity of the missions and I like how the individual missions have intermediate goals you can attain without having to solve the whole level at once. I also like the combination of infantry combat play and combat flying in some of the missions. I am enjoying it quite a bit!!

4 out of 5 stars Great Game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   March 2, 2008

Star Wars Battlefront II is way better then Battlefront 1. The gameplay is the biggest hit. The shooting isn't as good as Halos shooting, but the shooting is still awesome. In addition, you can zoom in with all guns now making the game much easier. The jedi modes are also fun. If you get boared of keep getting points to unlock jedis, then just go to Mos Eisly Assualt. That levels awesome. The graphics are good but the character models are bad looking. The sound is incredible. The sound of blasters, lightsabers, voiceacting, and music help bring the Star Wars feel to life. However I hate the annoying commander who keeps saying, "We've captured a command post." That guy is so annoying. The game is long and the menus are good as well. All in all, Battlefront II is a great game. Buy it!!
