1 out of 5 stars Stop Pointless Updates   March 25, 2008

I purchased a Sony PS3 to play video games. Now, every time I turn the PS3 on Sony is fixing their mistakes and wasting GAME PLAYERS time with constant updates. I do not want to spend my time downloading updates just because Sony did not properly setup their machines when they first shipped them. I have now had to spend 4 hours updating items that should never have been a problem in the first place. There have been 3 time wasting updates within 4 weeks.

Software and hardware manufactures have become so lazy that they are willing to jeopardize their good name by WASTING OUR TIME constantly updating their "broken" software. This is a mental illness now shared by a large percentage of the electronics industry. In Windows Vista, updates are constantly being forced on the consumer due to LAZY PROGRAMMERS in the corporate rush to sell more goods. I did not purchase a game machine to update the hardware every time I turn on the machine. A notice to all lazy companies, WE ARE NOT YOUR BETA TESTING GROUNDS!!! If you can not properly setup your hardware and software then do not sell your products. Customers have purchased these game machines to enjoy them, to play games, to have a fun with a group of friends. How can I have friends over to enjoy an evening of games when as soon as I turn on the machine the first thiNg it does is WHINE AT ME TO DOWNLOAD A POINTLESS UPDATE. Now a group of us can all sit around for 2 hours waiting for your company to update my machine. This is a GAME MACHINE!!!!!! It is for playing games. To all electronics manufacturers: It is no fun updating your screw ups with your constant updates. Do not waste out time anymore. Get your products right or do not sell them. Period.

I will simply sell the PS3 on ebay, and tell anyone I can that it simply wastes your time constantly updating the software. I will recommend to all people I know that you should buy a Wii so you do not have to waste your entire evening updating the PS3 every other time you switch it on. NO MORE FORCED UPDATES SONY!!!

I want to play games, not download pointless updates!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars All In One Entertainment System - Fantastic   March 13, 2008

I finally took the plunge and purchased a PS3 60GB model since they are no longer being manufactured. I did purchase elsewhere at $15.00 over retail for a new system since the prices here for the 60GB are out of control.

The PS3 40GB model will not play PS2 or PS1 games nor can you upgrade the hard drive. The PS3 80 GB model will play both PS2 and PS1 games BUT it is software emulated so not all of the games will play. Some that will play from my research do not play correctly. The PS3 60GB has the hardware built into it to play all PS games and one can upgrade the hard drive to any size desired.

I'm using mine for all PS games, Blue Ray, DVDs, and as a computer hooked up to a HDTV. The game graphics are stunning as well as the Blue Ray. The PS3 upconverts my DVD's (pressing info on my HDTV tells me the resolution) into a beautiful picture. The icing on the cake is that you can load Yellow Dog Linux 6.0 on the PS3 (all models) w/o affecting the gaming ability. YDL is freeware with Mozilla Firefox web browser, Open Office and a slew of other applications.

My entire entertainment system is now only the HDTV, SAT box, PS3, and surround sound receiver. In my opinion, one cannot go wrong buying any model. To get a game console, Blue Ray, DVD, and a computer off of one system with a HDTV output is simply SWEET. The only thing to consider is the ability to play PS2/1 games and upgrading the hard drive for which model to purchase. If you're leaning towards a new PS3 60 GB system...act fast before they're gone.

5 out of 5 stars Great DVD Player   March 12, 2008

I love Bluray movies. I don't use it for games much. I pretty much use it to play my old PS2 games. The only complaint is the fan. It is loud. I initially put it in an enclosed cabinet. It started making a high pitch sound. When I opened the cabinet a huge gust of hot air hit me. I obviously needs some open air for ventilation. It is now on top of the media cabinet and I have no problems. It syncs with my wifi router pretty easy.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome system, needs more games   March 2, 2008

The only complaint I have so far is the lack of games. That will come with time and I'm not worried.

The PS3 is a flawless Blu-ray player and the games I do have are a ton of fun. The 60GB version is fully compatible with all the older PS games.

The price isn't a problem for me. I bought my first DVD player for $400 and the PS3 stacks a video game system on top of that. Plus you can play downloaded videos, view pictures, etc etc.

Compared side by side with any other Blu-ray player, the PS3 is much faster and able to play any games or interactive content much more easily. Yes, even the set-top Sony player.

5 out of 5 stars Owner of all 3 consoles, this is the best system by far.   March 1, 2008

Up front, I wanted to say that I own all three new consoles (Nintendo Wii, Xbox 360 Elite and PS3). The Xbox 360 and PS3 are similar in gameplay, etc.. today. But in the coming years, when games can't fit on a standard 9GB DVD anymore, that is when the PS3 will really shine. For starters, here is why I like the PS3 more:

- It is FREE to play games online (360 costs $50/yr for Xbox Live Gold)
- The system is VERY quite. Even when playing Blu-ray or DVD movies. The 360 is VERY loud.

- It uses Bluetooth 2.0, so I can pair my standard Bluetooth headset, keyboard, etc.. instead of buying expensive Microsoft accessories.

- It has an upgradable 2.5" SATA HDD, so I can upgrade to a larger HDD. In fact, I upgraded my 60GB PS3 to 160GB. The 360 only offers up to a 120GB HDD and is 2-3x more expensive than the normal HDD.

- It has a very low failure rate. I've heard less then 1%; whereas the 360 has upwards of a 15-35% failure rate. Everyone I know is on their 2nd or 3rd 360 already and all of them are finally admitting the PS3 is a better and more realiable console.

- The Cell processor. Really, can anything else even compete? Look at the results on Folding@Home.

- Blu-ray won the format war, so now you have a HD movie player included. HD DVD is dead.

- It has BUILT-IN WiFi (wireless) and Gigabit ethernet. Wireless is a $99 add-on for the 360.

- Blu-ray games/movies are very difficult to damage and feature a really good scratch resistance coating compared to DVD's. This means your scratched up blu-ray games will still play on your PS3.

- The 60GB & 80GB models feature a built-in media card reader for transfering files, etc...

- Constant FW updates, which add new features and capabilities are far better than the 360.
