3 out of 5 stars good but still...   March 8, 2006

same game.. another game... ?? Devil may cry 3, I must agree, was one of the greatest game to be released on the ps2. I enjoy so much the original that i couldnt live without it. i decided to buy this new version which everyone was very exited about. I must say i was disappointed. Okay yeah i know vergil is cool and this new bloody palace is interesting too, but the major change is the difficulty level. for better and worse, this game is MUCH MORE easier than the original Devil May Cry 3. Come on the original was hard at first (unreasonably hard....) but after the second boss, everything just becomes easier. And FOR ONCE bosses are challenging. Don't tell me that you like easy games i don't believe you. They took off the reason why a liked so much this game, it was challenging. and who cares of the optional stuff if the game itself is desapointing. and the "new boss" yeah yeah... my 6 year old sister could have killed him without any difficulty. In cased you didn't realised it, i really enjoy the original a lot better than this special edition. well anyway you're the money owner, do what you want but i really suggest you the original version.

5 out of 5 stars you should be playing this game right now.   February 6, 2006

Devil may cry 3 for the PS2 was considered to be one of the best PS2 games ever released and i tend to agree with that. but people still had a few problems with it. for one the difficulty was really high and some people had a few problems enjoying game. in DMC 3 Special edition this has been fixed the difficulty of the normal game has been lowered considerably to allow more casual players to play and have fun.
one of the biggest draws of the DMC series as a whole was the ability to play as a bad ass tough guy who is half human and half demon known as dante. dante can use a variety of weapons ranging from swords to tri-chucks as well as a pretty wide assortment of guns(which never run out of ammo so have fun blasting away) but the real meat of this game lies in the ability to switch "styles" which gives dante a very wide variety of moves. he has a few different choices that u can choose. for example the "gunslinger" style puts more focus on the use of firearms and has additional moves and techniques when using his guns or "devil arms" as they are referred, to in the game. while the "swordmaster" style gives dante the ability to throw his sword at enemies and is more focused on close combat.
Killing enemies in the game will release orbs which can then be used to buy more moves for each style, giving dante more options when fighting. the game also rewards the player by making flashy looking kills and by chaining together attacks by giving the player more orbs when an enemy is defeated.
DMC 3 Special addition also adds the ability to play as Dantes brother Vergil who has his own unique move set.
this is definitely one of my favorite games and the ability to play as vergil is great. and now that the difficulty has been lowered everyone will be able to enjoy this great title.

5 out of 5 stars The Price is Right!   February 3, 2006

I never played DMC3 and decided not to buy it, because of news about the Special Edition version release. I'm glad I waited being their are a few more unlockables. This game is quite challenging as soon as you take control of Dante. I've played and beaten DMC and that was one challenging game on Normal mode. Never got around to DMC2 due to poor reviews and customer feedback. DMC3SE so far has been entertaining. I've out grown console gaming, but several games make me flip the PS2 or NGC power switch back on. This version is definitely worth $19.99.

Once the battles start it gets less difficult through progress as you become comfortable with the controls. Controls are spot on and very precise. Graphics are very nice on the PS2. I'm playing with Gold Star continue system on Normal/Default setting, which supposedly makes the game much easier due to unlimited continue. Still you must keep track of your items. If used during a stage or boss fight the item is gone even if you fail to complete a stage or beat a boss. Being items are hard to obtain just be sure to conserve until ready to use. With the Gold Star continue system I play the ending stage bosses one or two times w/out using any items to get a feel for them. This is a good thing with the Gold Star system, but less difficult. Most importantly the game allows the player to replay previous stage/missions at any time to get a certain item they may have forgotten (blue orb piece, etc.). Challenging and very entertaining game. Cool character, decent story, nice blend of weapon and action variation, good PS2 graphic display, and lots of virtual action. For $20 definitely worth the purchase compared to some of these other games in the same price range.

5 out of 5 stars BEST game for Playstation 2   January 30, 2006

This is an action/combat/adventure game. If you like God of War, Mortal Kombat, Resident Evil, Castlevania, Ninja Gaiden and/or Onimusha, you will love this game. Very little stupid action platform puzzle in this game, hooray! The camera is somewhat adjustable but it could be better. The background rotates and feels dynamic. 10000 times better than the original Devil May Cry or Player May Cry which was basically a 2-D game with 3-D graphics, pretty much like Double Dragon or Golden Axe IMO. The camera zooms in and out beautifully, you feel like you are in the game UNLIKE God of War. In God of War when you walk further into the screen the characters shrink and get smaller.

The great Devil May Cry 3 is finally a greatest hit. The new low price is nice, also the game is NOT the same as the ORIGINAL, there are tons of new stuff!

The graphics, detail, and motion are fantastic. It looks like a high quality XBOX game. A very high quality POLISHED game. Cool cut-scenes, dope enemies, great bosses. Everything is great. Some people say this game is too hard but its not. Any classical trained video gamer will have no problem. Those people who got turned off by this game are expecting to finish the game with button smashing the whole time. This game requires some skill.

Overall A MUST BUY for all PS2 Players.

5 out of 5 stars As If the Original Devil May Cry 3 Wasn't Good Enough!   January 28, 2006

Devil May Cry 3 was one of the best games of 2005. The only thing that kept some people away was the extreme difficulty of the game. Still, if you didn't wimp out, the game was fantastic. Now there's a special edition out, and it's one of the greatest gifts CAPCOM has ever given the Devil May Cry fans.

Since this review assumes you're all familiar with the universe of Devil May Cry 3, I suppose the only thing I really want to do here is tell you about what's new. Why should you buy this versin of Devil May Cry 3 over the original?

First things first, this game is easier than the original Devil May Cry 3. This is obvious by the new continue system that's been introduced. Before you had to get yellow orbs that were particularly expensive, and so they came on a limited basis. And then you'd run out of yellow orbs and have to play through a brutal level all over again. The new continue system pretty much ignores the yellow orbs and lets you continue from check points regardless of how many yellow orbs you have. If you have a gold orb, though, you can start right from where you died. If you did like the original yellow orb system you can still do that, but the average gamer will find the unlimited continues welcome.

The difficulty of the game, as noted above, is easier. If you didn't know, the original Devil May Cry 3 given to American gamers was much harder on the "normal" difficulty setting than in Japan. This is because "Normal" mode for America was actually the japanese "Hard" mode. It's fixed here, and it's fairly noticeable. There's also an easy mode to unlock (if you die a few times) and a "Very Hard" mode. Don't be fooled by "Very Hard" mode, though. It's virtually playing the original Devil May Cry 3. With those unlimited continues, however, I'm sure you'll note the game is still easier on these harder difficulty levels.

The best new feature is the ability to play as Vergil, Dante's evil brother. In the original Devil May Cry 3 you'll note he was lightning fast, and had a few devastating attacks. They're now all at your disposal!

You have to unlock Vergil, however. Either by completing the game as Dante once, or having a save file from the original Devil May Cry 3 on your memory card.

Playing through the story as Vergil is fun, but not nearly as exciting as Dante's. For one, all the cutscenes aren't included. Vergil gets his own introduction which makes you think he'll actually have a story. He doesn't. He just plays through Dante's levels (which was to be expected) but with no real purpose for doing it. At times it feels like it was a thrown in extra (a throwback to the unlockable character Sparda in the first Devil May Cry). So there's no continuity to his story. And it's really strange to be fighting Vergil while playing as Vergil. Why not fight Dante? It's fun to play as Vergil, but it would've been really cool if they'd given him his own story. We know CAPCOM can give each character their own scenarios (seen in Mega Man X4 and done especially well in Resident Evil 2).

There's a hidden boss... a jester, who is, compared to the other bosses, way too easy. Dante or Vergil can fight him, but you'll scratch your head wondering where the difficulty went against this thing.

The combat system of Devil May Cry 3 was gold. The fans knew it, and obviously CAPCOM knows it too, because there's a "Bloody Palace" unlockable which is just a fancy way of saying "Survival Mode." It's you pitted up against various foes. There are 9999 levels in this place, and you can choose to advance by either ten floors or one-hundred floors. It's time consuming and fun, although only hardcore fans will make it through the whole thing. You might run into one of the challenging bosses as well. As with Vergil Mode, you have to either complete the game first, or have save data from the original version.

There are some more extras. A turbo mode which allows you to speed up the gameplay (imagine juggling now?), a theater mode which allows you to view all the cutscenes in the game, there's an art gallery and there are costumes you can unlock for both characters.

Really, this is worth while. Some extras feel a little tacked on at times, but for the most part this isn't like getting some crappy "director's cut". It's like getting your favorite movie in a special edition DVD. It's packed full of extras!

The Good
+The graphics are still good
+The music is also still good
+The difficulty level has been fixed
+You can play as Vergil
+Survival Mode for those who love the combat system
+The combat system is just fantastic
+Art galleries, theater modes and other extras
+Turbo Mode is just fun to watch!
+New Boss

The Bad
-New Boss isn't all that exciting
-For hardcore Devil May Cry 3 gamers, the difficulty may feel like it's reduced too much
-It would've been really cool if Vergil had his own scenario
