5 out of 5 stars I just picked one of these up for $349, how could I say no.   July 11, 2007

I own the Wii and love it. I picked up an XBOX360 Elite and it's great. I own an HD-DVD player but I wanted to complete my collection by adding in the PS3 to not only get the gaming system but the Blu-Ray while they battle it out. My hold out was the price. Once the price dropped I paid a visit to my local Gamestop and low and behold they had a 20 gig unit in stock refurbished and they sold it to me for $349.00. How could I say no? It's a total steal at that price. Now I got me a Blu-Ray and a great gaming system to boot. I am not concerned about the loss of the memory ports vs the 60 gig becasue I won't be uploading pictures or music to it. I don't need the WiFi because I have no interest in buying a PSP and I can direct connect this to my cable modem because of the location of where my systems are. So I am VERY happy with my PS3. Matter of fact I picked up Resistance of Man and Ninja Gaiden and I must say they are both mind blowing awesome! The format wars have ended for me and I look forward to the exclusive games coming our way for the PS3 in the future. Soooo glad I waited for the price to drop.
*******

Just an quick update. I bought an internal 120 gig 2.5 HD and installed it within 2 mins on my 20 gig PS3. The 20 gig is the way to go because the upgrade is painless and cheap. You can pick one of these drives up for $66.00 online at various vendors. Save your duckets and get the 20 gig and do the upgrade as soon as it arrives. Gamestop has these machines for $349.00 used/refurbished.

5 out of 5 stars 20 GB PS3 for $499 = awesome fun   June 15, 2007

I am not really a gamer, but I bought the 20GB PS3 because it is a great
1) Bluray movie player
2) SACD player
3) CD player
4) SD-DVD player (with 1.8 firmware upgrade)
5) streaming media player (with 1.8 firmware)

So, for $500 you get all this and I have not even mentioned games.

5 out of 5 stars I liked it   May 23, 2007

I bought this before i deployed to iraq, and honestly i was very impressed with it. The graphics were really amazing and the way the menu screen is hooked up is really good. The only downfall was the fact that some of the games that were out when i first bought it. Madden 07 was just pushed out really quick for the release of the ps3. But other than that its amazing, i recommend that you buy one if your into gaming.

1 out of 5 stars there is no next generation   May 23, 2007

Three new consoles. Three deformed dwarves trying to win a beauty contest. Which pig shall we kiss?

For your consideration: the Wii, a Gamecube with a gimmick controller designed to appeal to kids for however long their attention span lasts. Like all fads, destined for the back of the closet as soon as they get tired of it. The very existence of this thing is taking development money away from games for grownups. The more successful it is, the more it sets back the industry.

The XBox 360, which is a nice toaster oven, at least. If you haven't heard, they still overheat. An engineering flop of epic proportions. Nothing like this has ever happened in the nearly 4-decade history of game consoles. An entire industry has sprung up around trying to keep these things cool. Think about it.

And the PS3. Take out a second mortgage, American consumer. You could buy a 360 AND a Wii for the price of this one. It seems Sony decided to bet that consumers would be willing to bet their life savings on both their game console AND their super-dvd format becoming industry standards. But the public didn't make that bet, and so Sony lost their bet. Whoops.

And here's the capper: nothing that any of these consoles does is actually new. They are nothing but insanely expensive graphics card updates, except for the Wii, which isn't even that much. The games look better, but play exactly the same. It's the same old games. It's very pretty Halo and very pretty Grand Theft Auto, but it's still just Halo and GTA. Think about it: that's why different versions of many of these games exist for the old consoles. In reality, there hasn't been anything new in games since the N64, a decade ago.

Gaming passed the point of diminishing returns a long time ago. With this generation, it has reached the point of negative returns: you are forced to spend a lot of money on a console upgrade to get the latest games, and yet the games haven't improved enough to justify it. Thus, you are spending a huge amount of money to get something that is only marginally better than what you had all along. You are now officially getting less bang for your buck than with the previous generation. You are actually losing ground as the technology "improves".

The PS3 has likely already lost the console wars, but the real losers are gamers. These are three turkeys of systems. I never thought I would say this, having seen every single console system come and go, but this generation is a complete disaster. Wake up. Since we all already have a dvd drive with a high-resolution monitor and vast computing cabability (its called a PC, and a low-end new one will blow these game consoles out of the water), why are we still willing to throw money at these things? Maybe it's time we all went back to PC gaming...

4 out of 5 stars Well, each one has its functions   May 6, 2007

I'm not thirteen, but I've played all three of them, and each one has their good things and bad things, like most competitors. The PS3 for example, is bulky and loud, but it has amazing graphics, and its the cheapest and most reliable blu-ray player for now. The Wii is a family fun consle, like the commercials they've shown, but not for guys like me who love war and shooting like socom. The Xbox 360 is for the xbox die-hard fans who want something simple, not complicated, and reliable. And any for you halo and ghost recon freaks out there, thats yours to buy.
My family wants the PS3 based for the blu-ray player, so we can put it downstairs, haha!! And we just found out we can hook our bose sound system to it, so I guess I'm getting it this summer with my and their money. So if you want power, get PS3. If you want fun, get Wii. If you want the simpler form of both combined, get the 360. Ciao!
