5 out of 5 stars Great Game - Great Hockey   February 14, 2007

Don't be misled by reviews from people who've said the gameplay and/or stats are unrealistic. Everything in the game can be adjusted through the use of sliders that control every aspect of the game. Someone mentioned 80 shots per game at 10 minute periods. I play full 20 minute periods, real time, and neither side gets near 80 shots a game. Why? Adjustments. I play at All-Star level, goalie strength set to 50%, Defense 100%, offense 0%, speed at 20% or so, speed burst 37%, speed burst duration 17%. These last 3 are probably the most important when trying for realistic action. With Speed burst set too high, every play can be a breakaway. At this setting, you might go the whole game without one. If the scoring/shots are still too high, notch passing down to 70 or 60%, there are a lot of missed passes in real hockey, and if you make every pass with the setting at 90 or 100, well of course you can get a shot or two off every minute of the game, especially with the speed setting too high as well. Believe me, everything can be adjusted, I've played over 120 games with this, and still sometimes tweek these settings for a most realistic and challenging experience.

5 out of 5 stars Top notch hockey game top notch sports game   February 9, 2007
As we move into the next generation of gaming, sports games seem to be fitting in nicely. With Sega bringing their 2K series to the 360 and PS3 gamers have a good reason to be happy. I have never been much of a hockey fan but when it comes to good hockey video games that's another story. I have always enjoyed the fast paced grinding action that these games present and NHL 2K7 is without a doubt the best so far. The presentation is excellent. Either you can go with a sportscast style that leaves you feeling like you are watching the game or the new dramatic score style which creates a wonderful soundtrack that fits the action of the game perfectly. Now this game is trully spectaculor. Although the online play is lacking which I hope picks up with next years edition. Overall I would say this game makes a wonderful edition to any PS3 fans collection.

I could probably writes pages of reasons I dont like this game but I will give a short pros and cons list and then a more in depth of some issues I have with the game.

Pros: Only NHL game for PS3, Graphics
Cons: Gameplay, Realness, Music, Saving

Overall Gameplay/Controlls - First of all I am a huge hockey fan and I would like to play a game that is somewhat realistic. I know Im playing a game and cant have an exact simulations but this game has major faults in my opinion. The gameplay and flow of the game is not bad, the players move fluidly and less like a turret compared to old games. But some dislikes are the amount of shots I can get off a game playing 10 min periods. Usually about 80-90 shots a game and I may only score a goal or two. If I play the 5 min it is about half obviously but I will get shut out by a goalie making 50 saves. Plus it is not like Im skating in the zone and just ripping shots, I do about 30 one timers a game that I get stoned on or I try to set up point shots and get rebounds which rarely go in either. This is all while I will give up maybe 20 shots a game because the computer refuses to shoot without passing it a couple times it seems. But usually they make the most of those 20 shots because my goalie cant stop anything some games. I given up 4 to 5 goals sometimes on 10 shots. The computer also does these wrap around goals where your goalies makes no attempt to stop it, this happened atleast once every few games to me. Ive tried to pass it around and play like the computer but it has not worked. I have also tried the to control the goalie myself using the Sixaxis controller, but it is a bad angle and you have to go off this green triangle in front of you to be in position for the save. Plus it is difficult to get the right sensitivity for one's tastes. Another difficult thing is getting a normal amount of penalties called for both teams. I have played the game on all the difficulty modes and I think Hall of Famer is probably the most realistic. It is a little harder to get shots off and the computer will shoot more. Plus then you dont score 10 goals a game and shutout everyone. Changing goalies is a chore, you have to scroll through almost every line combo to get there, and you cant just go backwards though the line combos either, because the are some lines behind the goalies like extra attackers. Then to change the goalie you have to assign each one to a position. The game will not intuitively fill the other spot with the guy who replaced him, and if you do autofill the game will just put the starter back in the net.

Graphics - They are pretty amazing, but you come to expect that for the price of PS3 and this game. The ice looks very nice and shows wear as the period goes on. The players look about as good as possible also. Some of the fans in crowd look stupid though, wearing hats with logos as big as their head.

Sounds - The sounds on the game are average. The sound effects and commentators are decent, nothing special. Except for the misprounced names. The sound track for this game doesnt have a band I have heard of before, and some songs are very annoying. The only good thing is you can deselect any song you do not want to hear again. The music will turn to static sometimes while a song is playing and drives me crazy. 2k claims it is sony's problem, but who knows.

Saving - Saving this game has to be the most annoying thing to me. Everytime you save you have to type in the name you want to save it under because it always goes back to the generic name. I guess if you only want to have one franchise or season at a time it would not be a problem. The game will also freeze sometimes will saving at the end of a season, no idea why.

Conclusion - I guess this game could be fun if you want score 10 goals a game and have unrealistic statistics. But wouldnt that get old. I have played easy over 100 games and was never able to find a consistent gameplay that produced semi-realistic stats. Whether it was scoring a lot, getting a hundred shots, giving up 10 goals, giving up a lopsided amount of powerplays while the computer knocks down my guys without the puck. I will say though simulating games provides some decent results over a season. I wish EA had a game I could compare this to, but Im sure neither one would be much better than the other. Too many little things drove me nuts and made me wish I rented this game before buying.

Quite possibly the best "sport" related game for the first wave launch. The graphics are awesome. I'm not even that big of a hockey fan. The ice looks outstanding. I too was a big EA supporter, not anymore.

This game absolutely blew me away. I'm a huge hockey fan, and in the past I've always gone with EA's Live series. For whatever reason, EA couldn't get their stuff together to release a version of Live for the PS3, so i went with 2k for once. I must say, screw EA. 2k's realism is top notch, the puck handling is super-intuitive, and the new camera angle makes all the difference. If you're lucky enough to score a PS3 this season, make SURE you grab this game...hockey fan or not, you won't be sorry!!
