Simply amazing! December 27, 2007 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
I am just going to be short and sweet. I have both 360 and PS3 and I love them both. But to be honest I am scared everytime I turn on my 360. Scared of the RROD(Red Ring Of Death) the failure rate of the 360 is estimated at 33% or higher with the PS3 in at about 1%. So... with the cost of the new system I am NOT just getting a great system but piece of mind, along with, a upscaling DVD player, BluRay player, wireless internet, wireless controller WITH A RECHARGABLE BATTERY, and just beautiful games running on my 52 inch at 1080p. It is just a flat out beautiful piece of technology!!!! Once you see it and touch it 1st hand you will feel like you bought something worth the price of admission. I sitll love the 360 and have many games left to play on the 360. But I was always a Sony guy till that price was announced for the PS3. So I had my 360 and it kind of lead me astray... but with a more resonable price SKU... there is no reason to not get this if you have the means. I am back with Sony and I have to say the PS3 is simply amazing!!
Lastly at the new price point, what you get far outweighs what they took out. They basically just trimmed the fat and made it more cost effective for the consumers! I will say again! Get one if you have the means! It is a great system!!!
Best Blu-Ray Player December 26, 2007 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I have a 360 HD-DVD player and wanted something on the Blu-Ray side so I can play movies from both camps. Ordered from Amazon and had it the next day. Setup was easy with most of the defaults not needing to be modified. Hooked up to my Sammy 4671 via HDMI. The thing is almost silent and the slightest ambient noise will cover up the fan (or is it the hard drive). It really is night and day compared to the 360 player. The PS3 is 1.1 compliant and from what I read there is no reason it can't be upgraded to 2.0 when that spec is finalized. Load times are much some other HD players I tried (Toshiba A35 and Samsung 1400). And it's a game system too! I have a couple games and again it's much quieter than the 360. The bluetooth remote is recommended unless you are using a universal remote (i.e. Harmony) then I would instead suggest the USB dongle to allow an IR remote to control the system. I bought the 40 gb over the 60 or 80 as this one runs cooler which should also mean it runs quieter. If you want to play PS2 games, SACD or need 4 USB ports then go for the 80gb PS3. Otherwise save a few bucks and have a quiet system.
5 stars and two thumbs up!
Excellent system December 26, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Just got this system and all I can say is WOW! I'm using it on a 720P plasma and Blue Ray looks fabulous. It even upconverts my standard DVDs. Can't imagine what it would look like on a 1080P screen. To me this is more of a multimedia unit versus a gaming console. I'm sure that I'll play games on it eventually (can't wait to play NCAA football 2008), but it is a great value for what you get in one unit. Easy setup (took me about 20 minutes). Very pleased with my purchase!
whoa... December 25, 2007 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Last year just before Christmas, my launch day 360 died from the infamous red rings of death. While I did get a replacement unit which worked well, I never forgot how disappointed I was with Microsoft. and I promised myself to buy a PS3 by the end of 2007.
Today is Christmas 2007, and I am a very proud owner of the 40 GB PS3!
The setup process was very easy, I simply plugged in my hdmi cable (I work at Best Buy, so I used my employee discount to get a good Monster cable. I say it was more than worth the money!), ethernet and ac power cord. What shocks me still is just how much more quieter the PS3 is compared to the 360's jet engine noise. I can barely pick up the hard drive spinning, and the blu-ray disc drive is almost sleath silent. Setting up my PSN account was super easy, and I was online in no time at all.
My main use for the PS3 will be for watching blu-ray and standard dvds. Whoa!!! I had only planned on watching Spiderman 3 for 10 mins, only to be enjoying the super sharp picture and sound at 1080i. My next tv will support 1080p, so my viewing experience will only improve.
Oh, and the games? Let's just say that Blockbuster will be seeing me rent alot of PS3 games this weekend! sony built this machine to last, and it shows in so many ways! I'll never consider any M$ game console ever again!!!
Careful! The 40GB version NOT backward compatible December 25, 2007 59 out of 89 found this review helpful
If you look really hard in the descriptions and reviews, you can find that the 40GB version of the PS3 is NOT backward compatible with PS2 games. Neither Sony nor Amazon go out of their way to inform the casual buyer of this important fact. After more than a year of reading that the PS3 would play PS2 games, to introduce a version without compatibility, and then not inform customers with an OBVIOUS warning is pretty low, as far as I'm concerned. A normal person would assume that the price difference between the 80GB and the 40GB was primarily due to the different sized hard drive, and not removing major features.
Backward compatibility was a VERY important feature to me, and finding out that the 40B wasn't was a major disappointment on Christmas morning. At least Amazon will take this unit back for a full refund, but a more obvious warning about this issue in their product description would have saved a lot of grief.
The 80GB version has reasonable PS2 compatibility, although not as good as the original 20GB/60GB versions. Otherwise, the PS3 is very nice, as you can read in other reviews. I just wanted to try to help people be aware of this major difference in the 40GB version.
