5 out of 5 stars The best and most cost effective solution.   December 6, 2007
9 out of 12 found this review helpful

First impression is, "Wow!" The PS3 turns out to be a great system. I purchased the 40gb model Dec. 2007. I was not interested at the initial release due to the over-hype and price. However, with the latest updates the PS3 is finally readily available and costs LESS than a comparably configured 360. For reference, I also own a new 360 and a Wii.

Compared to the 360 the PS3 is a better value, it performs better, and it is much quieter.

Value. Consider the current state of the market:

Xbox: 400 + HD-DVD 170 + HDMI: 30 + Wifi: 100 + Online: 50/yr = 750
PS3: 500 + HDMI: 30 + Wifi: 0 + Online: 0 + A2 (Toshiba HD-DVD movie player):150 = 680

The less expensive solution gives you BOTH blu-ray and HD dvd movie formats.

Performance. This is largely a factor of the game studio. All I know is that the games I have played on the PS3 have all been smoother than the 360. Also, the textures load faster. The graphics in Uncharted, for example, are sick (way better than the current 360 exclusive Mass Effect). Playing Uncharted on my 1080p tv gives me the "wow" factor.

Noise. The PS3 is much quieter, so much that you will not hear it when playing or more importantly while watching dvd's. The 360 on the other hand, is like watching movies while your mom is vacuuming. To me, this was the deal breaker and the main reason why I even considered trying a PS3 in the first place.

Some common complaints about the PS3 and my counterpoints. Complaint: Not many titles. Counter: Not true as of Dec 2007. The quality of titles on the PS3 is what you need to consider. There are many great games out there for any genre that you like. Honestly, how many games do you need? Each game is 50+ unless you buy used. Do you really need and can you afford 100 games? For every genre of gaming, I can name a few outstanding titles. For example, Action (Uncharted), RPG (Oblivion), Online (Warhawk), War (MGS). It is beyond the scope of this review to name all of the great PS3 games that currently exist. My advice is to decide what kind of game you're in the mood for and do a little bit of online research. Complaint: Costs more. Counterpoint: Not true as outlined above. Complaint: Tied to Blu-Ray. Counterpoint: True but blu ray has many exclusive movies that you cannot currently get in HD. And, in the final analysis you can still buy a HD DVD player and have BOTH formats and pay LESS than what you would for a comparably configured 360 with a HD player alone.

The list of pros and cons can go on and on but I'd like to sum up by saying that I am genuinely impressed with the PS3. I wish I would have considered it sooner, before I bought my noisy, clunky 360. Nobody knows the future but my guess is that the PS3 console will continue to come down in price and PS3/blu-ray titles will continue to expand. Given the current state of the industry (Dec. 2007) I can heartily endorse the PS3 and I would strongly urge anyone who is trying to decide between a PS3 and 360 to just buy the PS3 and don't look back. You will be happy.

5 out of 5 stars And it doesn't get as hot as people say   December 3, 2007

Just to make this short, and not bore you with the story of how I decided to get a PS3 over Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii.
Nintendo Wii are non existent and I even went over the Internet to get the PS3 since they wer giving away the same doorbuster deal at the stores website and I already had $175.00 in gift cards. Xbox 360 is more expensive than PS3 if you want to have wireless internet access and HD DVD.
Getting 1 Game and Two movies free instantly plus 5 movies free by mail, also helped. I wanted a system that would also let me enjoy my HDTV to it's highest potential. I have a 720p but once the PS3 detected the TV it showed its highest resolution is 1080i. To be honest I see no difference between both, but I enjoy a crisper image. But to get this quality you should get an HDMI there is one offered in amazon.com for 37 cents, you read right. It is offered by SF Planet. I ordered it on Friday night and by Wednesday I had it in my mail box. It costs over

What I Like

* Integrated Hi Fi -If I had read the manual might have taken me less, still took me about 20 minutes to set it up with my wireless network.

* BD Player- Movies look much better even compared to DVD's in 480p. Main reason to get it

* Hi definition gaming- You can still get the 80 GB version if you are a hardcore gamer

* Sony Store- You can download free demos so you don't end up paying 60 bucks for a game that you end up not liking at all. Example Resistance fall of men looked interesting but FPS is no my favorite Genre and I didn't like it. Also you can download PS1 games payed. Also available free are videos of BD movies, Theatrical trailers and game trailers.

* Can customize the wall paper with your favorite picture just like you would a computer.

* You can surf with some limitations the internet, at least you can read your emails.

* Being able to charge the controls connecting the USB cable to a computer.

What I don't like:

* Not being able to play Gears of War.

* This version doesn't have the card reader the 80 GB has

* 4 usb ports are more convenient than 2 but I can live with that.

* BD vs. HD DVD war still going on I don't want to end up with a collection of unplayable media.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE this PS3 system   December 1, 2007

I just have to say that I love this system.. I was not a game player before this system. Being 32 years old I was trying to find a new distraction and I did. But... I first tried the nintendo Wii... Which for me, Sucked. The graphics were poor and I just didnt' care for it. So on to ebay it went... When the PS3 lowered its price to $399.00 i said why not I give it a try. Well, I'm some glad I did.

The graphics are amazing, I love that it has blue ray. (which both the Wii and Xbox 360 do not offer, they offer an addon HD-DVD drive but that's another $200.00.... +++ Blue ray is better anyway..

Also the PS3 has WIFI built in... both which are options on the Wii and the Xbox360 ... Add some more $$$$$$...

So... What's my favorite games? The Simpsons and the game I just downloaded from the PS3 online store "Pain"... ( I LOVE PAIN)!!!.

What I'm looking forward to..... PS3 Home... An online virtual community for PS3 users.

But a PS3... You'll Love It!

4 out of 5 stars Playstation 3   November 30, 2007

I have been looking forward to upgrading my Playstation 2 to the Playstation 3 ever since it was announced some time ago. I finally was able to purchase the system and recived it just before Thanksgiving. The system is sleek looking and pretty quite, quieter than my ps2 for the most part (note that the 40GB unit is supposed to run quieter and cooler than the 60GB and 80GB units).

Setup was very easy. I already had an up-converting DVD player and I essentially pulled it out and put in the PS3. Power, HDMI to the TV, Optical for audio to my receiver. The interface came right up and is simple and intuitive. It was easy to connect the system to my wireless internet and download the latest firmware. Signing up for Playstation network was a breeze also(Note that you can plug any old USB keyboard in and do all the typing that way. Saves a lot of time.) Most of the system settings were already configure optimally for my set-up so there was not much tweaking needed.

Games are easy to load and look and sound GREAT. The sixaxis is very similar to the ps2 controller so there was not much to get used to. At this point I have not noticed the lack of the rumble feature, but it would be nice to get that in the future. I was impressed that the FPS games I tired controlled pretty well compared to many of the games I tried on the PS2.

There are opinions that there are no games to play on the system, but as far as I am concerned there is plenty to keep me busy, and I do not see my PS3 collecting dust anytime soon. Right now I have Ratched & Clank, Oblivian, and Call of Duty 3. I am looking to pick up Drakes Fortune, Call of Duty 4 and Assassin's Creed this holiday season.

There is a lack of backwards compatibility and anyone considering purchasing this product should know that before going forward. We do play a lot of PS2 games still (Guitar Hero, Singstar, Katamari) so I will have to keep that older system hooked up as well. If you want to play PS2 games and don't want to keep your older system hooked up look into the 60GB or 80GB units.

I was vary impressed with the DVD and Blu-Ray capability once I purchased the remote. I agree with some that the romote should have been included with the system since Sony is pushing this as a movie player as well as a game console. The PS3 actually seems a little smarter than my other DVD player (also a Sony) when it comes to detecting the aspect ratio as 4:6 or 16:9. With my old player I would have to adjust it myself with the TV remote. PS3 does it for me. I never see a stretched or squashed image. The Spiderman Blu-Ray that comes with the system looks amazing! Also Pixar movies just pop out of the screen. There is a real difference with Blu-Ray and my TV only supports 720p. I am excited to try out more Blu-Ray disks from Netflix.

The Playstation 3 also allows you to stream music and videos from your PC over the network. So it acts like a Slingbox or the Apple TV. I have access to my complete mp3 library from my living room now. You can even create play lists. I have not tried the video yet though.

Other features include web browsing, message boards, and the Sony Store, where you can download demos for free and classic games for a low price.

My only gripe is a big one, and forces me to take off a star even though I hate to. After playing the system for about three days the disk drive failed. It would not read any disk at all. No games, no movies. Nothing. After talking to Sony they said it was defective and told me to send it in and it would take about 3 weeks to get a new one. Instead I worked with Amazon and they sent me a new one in a few days (Amazon's customer service is amazing). So I am back up an running and enjoying every minute. From my research the PS3 is supposed to have a very low failure rate compared to most consoles. I was just unlucky I guess.

Overall I love the system and am very happy with the features it offers.
