Great system December 7, 2007 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
PS3 is awsome, i wish it came with a better movie. Or you should be able to choose which blue ray movie you want with it. That is the only thing that would make this deal better.
HD and next gen gaming in one December 7, 2007 14 out of 17 found this review helpful
Just received my new 40 GB PS3 12/6/07. I'm 36 and I feel like a kid again with this new toy. I have a 52" Sony LCD to utilize the full potential of this system on. My first impressions are that it is surprisingly quiet and looks very much like a high quality product in its design. I went with the 40 GB because I was looking mainly to use this for HD movies and next gen games, and cared zero about backwards compatibility. I ordered Call of Duty 4 with this system. The game looks and sounds incredible. You really get immersed in the experience when playing, in a way I never got with the PS2. It's in those fine details. Graphics and sound, that has to be seen and heard to truly appreciate how far we have come to get us to this level of gaming and movie experience. My first Blu Ray movie experience is with the Spiderman 3 included in this package. I am amazed at the level of detail in this format. WOW!!! That sums up my review here.
When this was delivered I tore through that box like I was 10 years old on Christmas morning, and I'm a little excited right now so that may be clouding my opinion, but It's hard for me to think that anyone would feel disappointed with the 40GB PS3. No buyer's remorse here.
Work will be very torturous tomorrow... but I guarantee you that I will be whistling and singing all day knowing that I have a great experience waiting on my return. Cause when I get home the world is all right...My life is all right. And new fun times have just landed.
PS: even though Amazon lists that "in the box" has Ethernet cables as being included, they are not. I Hope those of you that are making the plunge into the PS3 have a similar experience... Best wishes and have a Safe, Fun, Happy holiday season!
The best and most cost effective solution. December 6, 2007 9 out of 12 found this review helpful
First impression is, "Wow!" The PS3 turns out to be a great system. I purchased the 40gb model Dec. 2007. I was not interested at the initial release due to the over-hype and price. However, with the latest updates the PS3 is finally readily available and costs LESS than a comparably configured 360. For reference, I also own a new 360 and a Wii.
Compared to the 360 the PS3 is a better value, it performs better, and it is much quieter.
Value. Consider the current state of the market:
Xbox: 400 + HD-DVD 170 + HDMI: 30 + Wifi: 100 + Online: 50/yr = 750 PS3: 500 + HDMI: 30 + Wifi: 0 + Online: 0 + A2 (Toshiba HD-DVD movie player):150 = 680 The less expensive solution gives you BOTH blu-ray and HD dvd movie formats.
Performance. This is largely a factor of the game studio. All I know is that the games I have played on the PS3 have all been smoother than the 360. Also, the textures load faster. The graphics in Uncharted, for example, are sick (way better than the current 360 exclusive Mass Effect). Playing Uncharted on my 1080p tv gives me the "wow" factor.
Noise. The PS3 is much quieter, so much that you will not hear it when playing or more importantly while watching dvd's. The 360 on the other hand, is like watching movies while your mom is vacuuming. To me, this was the deal breaker and the main reason why I even considered trying a PS3 in the first place.
Some common complaints about the PS3 and my counterpoints. Complaint: Not many titles. Counter: Not true as of Dec 2007. The quality of titles on the PS3 is what you need to consider. There are many great games out there for any genre that you like. Honestly, how many games do you need? Each game is 50+ unless you buy used. Do you really need and can you afford 100 games? For every genre of gaming, I can name a few outstanding titles. For example, Action (Uncharted), RPG (Oblivion), Online (Warhawk), War (MGS). It is beyond the scope of this review to name all of the great PS3 games that currently exist. My advice is to decide what kind of game you're in the mood for and do a little bit of online research. Complaint: Costs more. Counterpoint: Not true as outlined above. Complaint: Tied to Blu-Ray. Counterpoint: True but blu ray has many exclusive movies that you cannot currently get in HD. And, in the final analysis you can still buy a HD DVD player and have BOTH formats and pay LESS than what you would for a comparably configured 360 with a HD player alone.
The list of pros and cons can go on and on but I'd like to sum up by saying that I am genuinely impressed with the PS3. I wish I would have considered it sooner, before I bought my noisy, clunky 360. Nobody knows the future but my guess is that the PS3 console will continue to come down in price and PS3/blu-ray titles will continue to expand. Given the current state of the industry (Dec. 2007) I can heartily endorse the PS3 and I would strongly urge anyone who is trying to decide between a PS3 and 360 to just buy the PS3 and don't look back. You will be happy.
And it doesn't get as hot as people say December 3, 2007 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
Just to make this short, and not bore you with the story of how I decided to get a PS3 over Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii. Nintendo Wii are non existent and I even went over the Internet to get the PS3 since they wer giving away the same doorbuster deal at the stores website and I already had $175.00 in gift cards. Xbox 360 is more expensive than PS3 if you want to have wireless internet access and HD DVD. Getting 1 Game and Two movies free instantly plus 5 movies free by mail, also helped. I wanted a system that would also let me enjoy my HDTV to it's highest potential. I have a 720p but once the PS3 detected the TV it showed its highest resolution is 1080i. To be honest I see no difference between both, but I enjoy a crisper image. But to get this quality you should get an HDMI there is one offered in amazon.com for 37 cents, you read right. It is offered by SF Planet. I ordered it on Friday night and by Wednesday I had it in my mail box. It costs over
What I Like
* Integrated Hi Fi -If I had read the manual might have taken me less, still took me about 20 minutes to set it up with my wireless network.
* BD Player- Movies look much better even compared to DVD's in 480p. Main reason to get it
* Hi definition gaming- You can still get the 80 GB version if you are a hardcore gamer
* Sony Store- You can download free demos so you don't end up paying 60 bucks for a game that you end up not liking at all. Example Resistance fall of men looked interesting but FPS is no my favorite Genre and I didn't like it. Also you can download PS1 games payed. Also available free are videos of BD movies, Theatrical trailers and game trailers.
* Can customize the wall paper with your favorite picture just like you would a computer.
* You can surf with some limitations the internet, at least you can read your emails.
* Being able to charge the controls connecting the USB cable to a computer.
What I don't like:
* Not being able to play Gears of War.
* This version doesn't have the card reader the 80 GB has
* 4 usb ports are more convenient than 2 but I can live with that.
* BD vs. HD DVD war still going on I don't want to end up with a collection of unplayable media.
I LOVE this PS3 system December 1, 2007 8 out of 11 found this review helpful
I just have to say that I love this system.. I was not a game player before this system. Being 32 years old I was trying to find a new distraction and I did. But... I first tried the nintendo Wii... Which for me, Sucked. The graphics were poor and I just didnt' care for it. So on to ebay it went... When the PS3 lowered its price to $399.00 i said why not I give it a try. Well, I'm some glad I did.
The graphics are amazing, I love that it has blue ray. (which both the Wii and Xbox 360 do not offer, they offer an addon HD-DVD drive but that's another $200.00.... +++ Blue ray is better anyway..
Also the PS3 has WIFI built in... both which are options on the Wii and the Xbox360 ... Add some more $$$$$$...
So... What's my favorite games? The Simpsons and the game I just downloaded from the PS3 online store "Pain"... ( I LOVE PAIN)!!!.
What I'm looking forward to..... PS3 Home... An online virtual community for PS3 users.
But a PS3... You'll Love It!
