Well, I just finished Silent Hill: Homecoming yesterday, as my football team had a bye week and I figured I'd put the extra 4hrs. to good use. I took my time playing the game (I don't believe in rushing through a game, just so I can say I beat it in a day) and found that I thoroughly enjoyed the game and can't understand which game all of the one and two star reviewers were playing, because it couldn't have been the same one I was playing (and no, I don't work for Konami, though I wish I did).

(Note: I am beginning the review when the "real" game begins, as I don't feel the intro segment needs much comment as it is best enjoyed just playing it.)

I started the game out a bit skeptical as it was a little too familar and reminded me of the others, particularly Silent Hill 1 and Silent Hill 2, with completely cloud covered streets and eerie noises all around. I was impressed with the fog as I do believe it is next-gen in the way it varies in volume and dissipates while walking through. As for the storyline and where to go in the beginning, it is pretty straightforward with a some puzzles that may slow you down. The enemies are not too tough at in the beginning, so you find yourself more exploring.

I'm a little amazed at reading the negative reviews (and everyone has a right to voice their opinion, me included) and how they chastise the game for a lot of things that I just didn't see. I'll tell you what I saw while playing.

The first next-gen Silent Hill blew me away with hi-res cutscenes and a lot of detail to the interiors of buildings and rooms. (For example, in the Shepherd house, in your character's old room, you see little details such as a model jet hanging from the ceiling, not to mention every detail that would make it a boy's bedroom.) All of the locales had the same level of detail on the outside and inside and made for a very engaging playground for your character to move through.

I noticed the graphics got berated a lot in the reviews. I am astonished by that, particularly in the last 1/3 of the game. The character models are very detailed, as is the environments. Everyone needs to remember that a game set in fog (for external scenes) can only be so detailed as a lot is obscured by the fog. Because of this, sure, some exteriors don't jump out at you, but for areas with limited fog or interior scenes, the graphics jump out at you in hi-res next-gen glory.

Also, the new combat system seems to be a love it or hate it debate. I found it intuitive and much better than any fighting system of prior-Silent Hill's. The dodge could have worked more consistently, but for the most part the light/heavy attacks, mixed with dodging, helped to keep the battles fresh and heart-pounding. As for those who said that it made the battles easier, I didn't find that to be the case as the enemy AI is in your face with most of the enemies. Also, I counted about 7-8+ different enemy types so I am not sure why there needs to be more as some have complained, as most games of this survival horror type just have a handful of enemy types (even Resident Evil and the new Dead Space).

The puzzles are intriguing and thank God they are not impossibly difficult. Some people like intricate puzzles, others like ones that can be solved after some thought, but not ones that hit you over the head and make progression impossible. All of the puzzles made sense and if they didn't take a degree in calculus, I know I certainly didn't need ones that difficult. I'd rather be spending my time moving on and seeing new things.

The developers did a very good job spreading around health items and ammo. There was never a time I felt like I was going to have to reload an earlier save in order to progress. And as for weapon types, how many are really needed in a game like this? It's not Metal Gear Solid and I felt that the 4-5 weapons were just right and each had a specific enemy they worked best against, though in all honesty, most could be defeated with the metal pipe or shotgun.

The bosses were varied and not overly difficult. I am 32 and have a family and don't have the time to spend a week figuring out how to beat one boss character, so I was happy to find that they were challenging but not overly difficult.

The soundtrack was just as eerie as everything else and added so much to the atmosphere.

I took my time and got about 16-18hrs. out of it and I think that is pretty good these days. I got a so-so ending that left more questions than answers, but maybe on subsequent playthroughs I will get a one that makes more sense. Really, that was my only serious gripe--the ending I got. Also, to be honest, there could be some improvements to combat and the detection system for opening doors, needs a little tweaking--but that is it. This is pure Silent Hill for the next generation and I only home the next one tries a little reinvention like Resident Evil 4, so as to keep the series fresher. This is a great game for Silent Hill and survival horror fans and do not let the bad reviews keep you from renting or buying it. It is well worth the investment of your money and time.

Silent Hill: Homecoming was a natural selection for me. I'm a loyal fan of the series. This Silent Hill has great graphics, and the sound quality is the same. Of course, you have to love the music from Akira Yamaoka! Overall, the game supplied what you would expect from any Silent Hill game. However, some may feel that something is still missing once you beat it, as I did. Other than that, I love the game, and it should be a must buy for all Silent Hill fans.

I certainly put this game as ResidentEvil-like game.

I was disappointed because SilentHill Home comming loses the actual
intent of SilentHill series.

This one just shows a VIDEO GAME!!; I cannnot explain exactly what, but I'm sure the game does not have the original scareness and entertainment.

I gave this one 3 stars because sometimes it shows pieces of "SilentHill".

The graphics and sound are great and that's about it , the first annoyance is the lighting in this game, the flashlight is not bright enough, you would think that in a game like this it would contribute to the scary factor but it doesn't , the second annoyance is the enemies, they are more difficult to kill than in previous games, and if you keep dying trying to kill one of these [...] the creepiness from the game will go away and all you are left with is frustration, so instead of feeling afraid of them you feel like you hate them, I lost all interest in future Silent Hill games I think is time to look somewhere else for a good scare

I'm a fan of horror games and I love the Silent Hill series. This game is kind of a mixed blessing. I would say it's okay, but don't expect the caliber of horror in the previous games.

PROS:
The story is enjoyable and fun to watch.
Grotesque gore. Definitely not for the kiddies.
The musical score is amazing.
The graphics and the scenery is amazing. It gave me goosebumps!

CONS:
TOO easy. Seriously... if you wanted to beat this game, just run. That's all you have to do. Run.
I'm not even a hardcore gamer. I only buy like 2 games a year. I suck at video games.
Barely any replay value aside from playing in different costumes. Or bonus weapons that suck.
Where are the scares? A crucial part of the horror genre is that you provide us with the horrors. There's not even a large medley of monsters. Expect to walk around through empty rooms or roads, with a handful of monsters or so. It's like eating a burger without ketchup, mustard or any kind of sauce. Yes. The burger is cooked perfectly, but something is missing. It doesn't taste right.

Then again, I could be wrong. Who cares...
