All You Need - Almost September 19, 2008 It is what it advertises: Metal Gear Solid 1, 2, and 3.
There is nothing to complain about for Metal Gear Solid 1 or 2.
However, as many others have noted, Metal Gear Solid 3 is missing something. The original full game of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is there, with improvements (primarily in the controllable camera) from its second incarnation as Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence. However, what the Essential Collection lacks is the second bonus disc that comes with Metal Gear solid 3: Subsistence. Buying Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence outside of this Essential Collection, you get to play the original Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 (2D games starring Solid Snake in his youth, providing you further insights into the world of Metal Gear) a bonus game called Snake VS Monkey, a few other less notable bonuses.
Not being able to play Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 was a let down, however, the three main games of Metal Gear Solid 1, 2, and 3 are in there. All three games are fun if you are looking for a stealth-heavy, cinematic video game experience.
If it isn't too much trouble, you should definitely buy all three separately for all the bonus features: Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance, and Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence. Do not pick up Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty or Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater by mistake--those are the unimproved versions that lack the bonus features.
GREAT GAME, GREAT STORY, GREAT EVERYTHING!!!! September 17, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
First of all let me say that I got introduced to this games by first playung Metal Gear 4 for the PS3, so you can imagine, when I first played the last one, the story did not make a lot of sense, so my lovely wife got me his set as a gift, so I started frm the begining, as soon as the story in MGS1 started to unfold I got more interested in the games, as soon as i finished each game I started playing the next one, so as you can imagine I have been playing MGS games for a whole month with out stoping.
The game play is very similar for the three games, with the excpetion in the two view modes in MGS1 wich was developed for the PS1, but still a very good game. The second game introduces characters wich will appear in MGS4 and have very important roles in both games, and the gameplay is much more smoohter than the first. But the best of all is MGS3 wich explains the origins of Metal Gear, and the story has twist plots at every corner, so besides getting nervous during game the cutscenes with the story are OSCAR winning perfomances. The game play is superb, you get to change you camouflage as you need it get to different weapons, and have to use every corner to evade the enemy.
So, in conclussion, if you are a new player in the MGS series like me, I highly recomend this set, for the gameplay, story and value of all 3 games.
PLAY ON!!!!!!!
The price is great. September 14, 2008 Being that this is the essentials collection... there aren't any bonuses or extras that came with the other games. Which is fine by me... the games are what got me hooked in the first place.
Metal Gear Essential Collection September 9, 2008 This is a deal no one should pass up! You get three great games for a real low price. Classic Psone Metal Gear Solid. Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance And Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence!
Buyer beware of the only downfall of this deal. (Just my opinion) Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence only comes with Disc 1. If you want Disc 2 that has the 8-bit old school Metal Gear 1-2 then you have to buy the standalone Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence.
Other than that this is the best deal I have seen so far.
Good buy, but a little disappointing. September 9, 2008 Not the greatest bundle in the world, but still a good one. Although it comes with all-new packaging, the booklets inside are colorless, and the box holding the set is wobbly and thin when you take the cases out.
This package includes the original Metal Gear Solid for PSone, MSG2: Substance, and MGS3: Subsistence minus the second disc that came in the original Subsistence release. Although the online features for MGS3: Subsistence are no longer available, the second disc still had many good off-line features. This was a major let-down for me, as well as no Snake vs Monkey. They basically pressed a bunch more disc-ones from Subsistence to put in this bundle. Other than that, the games are great, as they always have been, and this is a good buy if you're missing them from your collection. MGS1 is now hard to find, and the other two, when bought individually, would cost around $30 or more in total.
